So, I want to make my 4 y.o. daughter a dress like the one the girls wore in the film Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events (a picture of the older girl's dress and its mockup here (http://www.fashionsintime.com/html/violet.html)). I don't know where to begin to find a small version of a dress like this. Anyone who has tips, let me know! Thank you. (Xposted to Gen Sewing) see the mundane life of a housewife.

Thanks, esrun. I fixed the link. Lemony Snicket is a book-turned-movie (the movie came out this year and is excellent, BTW). Here are a couple pictures of Violet's dress: http://www.fashionsintime.com/assets/images/violetb1.jpg http://www.fashionsintime.com/assets/images/violetb2.jpg see the mundane life of a housewife.

You would just have to start one feature, analyze that and design it one section at a time. The basic shape of the dress and the sleeves would not be that hard to either alter or perhaps find. Also, the inset in the center would not be either. What you would have to decide is whether the pleated inset down the front is an inset, collar or part of the bodice...it could be either. Looking at the dress, I think that it is some sort of nice lace or bonded fabric (on sheer) fabric as an overlay over something else, maybe tafeta or satin. I wouldn't use an acetate because of the problems with fading, I would probably put it over a poly satin.
