I found a sock pattern that I thought would be pretty easy to do. So far so good, NOW I am suck and need some help.
How do I figure the shaping of the heel when the directions for this part are not very clear.
I have 32 stitches on the active needle, it states to P half (16) of these plus 1, then pp2, then p1, turn.
Now the directions state to K to halfway point then turn. This does not sound right!!! I am thinking that when I turn I have to SL1, knit "?" ( I'm not sure, each time I try it comes out lop-sided!!"),SSK,K1, turn. If I could figure out how many to knit before the SSK then I'm pretty sure I can figure the rest.
So my question is this: Is there a tried and true method to figuring this out based on how many stitches you have on your needle?

Can you type out exactly what it says as I am confused too! What does pp2 mean (check the abreviations) and stick in what the abbreviations mean as well - Then I'll give it a go unless Liz can work it out first!

So long as your heel turns out symmetrical it often doesn't matter where it sits on the needle - adjust the stitches on the needles afterwards to balance out foot and instep stitches. Unless you have fancy clocks or something on the ankle it won't matter.

Jan,

Sorry about the it should be P2tog.

The directions state: (it states to do the knit part first, I like to start it from the purl side, so I flipped it.)

"Purl to the middle, purl one more, purl 2 together, purl one more. Turn and knit back to the middle, knit one more, knit two together, and knit one more."

I "think" I understand what it is saying, I'm confused as to how far to knit back before I do the SSK, K1. DO I come back 4 stitches? Or am I way off?

The web site I got it from is; www.woolworks.org/patterns/guysox.txt

It's titled Socks knitted by and for a guy.

"To turn the heel after the square has been knitted, I follow this formula.

Knit to the middle, knit one more. Knit two together, Knit one more. Turn
Purl back to the middle, purl one more, Purl two together, and purl one more.

Turn again. where you have turned previously will have a small hole so.

Knit to the hole, Knit two together taking one stitch from each side of
the hole. Knit one more. Turn

Purl to the hole. Purl two together either side of the hole. Purl one
more. Turn and carry on the pattern as set out."

Those are his instructions - I read this as:
Knit 17 (to the middle and one more) K2tog K1(19sts on rt hand needle)Turn
P4,P2tog P1 (18 sts on rhn) turn
k5, K2tog K1 turn
P6,P2tog P1 turn
K7,K2tog,K1 turn
P8,P2tog,P1 turn.......
and carry on this way until all the stitches are worked off both needles.

Hope this helps - they are not the clearest written directions if you are not used to sock knitting. If you are starting with a purl row it doesn't really matter - then you would start Purl17, P2tog,P1 turn
K4, K2tog,K1 turn and so on

ask again if I have confused you.

Sewhappie,

I like this pattern you found, I'm going to try it for the socks that my Uncle wants me to knit for him. What size needles are you using? I think I will try size 5. I missed your question ealier this week, but Jan has it right.

Jan,

I was also confused by the term pp2, until Sewhappie clarified it. I came across another term in another pattern I was thinking of doing and I don't know what it is. I haven't had the time to research it yet and I can't remember now what it was. I'll have to find the pattern again and post it here.
Happy sewing/quilting/crafting
Liz

Thanks for your help with this one gang. I thought I was on the right track but wasn't sure, and my Knitting Queen Cousin is on a Caribbean Cruz right now!!!!! She has some nerve leaving me when I need help!!! HEHEHEHEHE
I am using a size 3 double needle for this project. I wear a womens size 11 shoe and on this size needle it fits perfect, not tight- not loose.
