I am making my elderly, incapaciatated mother a shirtwaist dress. I have made them before but always have a problem with the bottom of the button placket. I have drawn up the pattern myself therefore have no "instructions" as the best way to cut out and sew thisto make the placket work . Somehow I always manage to cobble it together. However it has been sometime since I made her a dress and I am having a senior moment myself. And I would like to find out the correct way before I cut out the second dress. I have cut the front as one piece with an extension including buttonhole extension and seam allowance for facing to below waist level. Now the problem comes with trying to sew up the centre front from bottom and getting the drated button flaps to overlap and sit neatly at the bottom. I hope I have explained myself so someone can understand what I am getting at. If I had a set of pattern instructions I guess it would be straight forward!! Thanks anyone. Jenny |

The placket is in the skirt? Pleat the skirt on the button hole side to hide the placket below the waistline. The depth of the pleat would be the same as the overlap of the front so that the placket of the button hole side meets the placket under the buttons. Is that what you mean?

Thanks for your tip but I think I might not have explained the dress properly. It is a one piece dress with buttons at center front to below waist level and then the center front of the skirt part just sewn up to the button placket. Maybe this description will shed some light on my problem so to how to make a simple joining of the two constructions. JEnnifer |

Is your pattern notched at the bottom of the button row or is there a pleat there so that the front is offset. I now understand how the front looks but I don't understand why there is a problem. By it extending below the waist there it may not need the little "v" that I was thinking of at the bottom. If the front is totally flat, there would have to be a notch to allow the buttons to go behind the button holes, or there would have to be a pleat to allow the button holes to go over the top. Usually the bottom of the buttons is reinforced then notched to the corner of the gavrment and turned, then the seam is sewn to the bottom so that the button side is finished to the seam before the skirt is sewn. After the skirt is sewn, the bottom is sewn across to hold it in place. I'm so sorry because I am having a hard time figuring out where your problem might be. I still don't think I have it....more info. I'll be up just a few more minutes and then I'll go back to bed if you answer quickly, I'll try to get back to you before I go back to bed. pam
