Try a search for 'choli'.
I found this free pattern, but I don't think it is exactly what you are looking for.

Choli pattern (http://www.annabella.net/choli.html)

bustercfme and dmoses... thank you both for these links...
actually, i live in india, and i have my graduation day coming up soon. i'm supposed to wear a sari, and every tailor here is absolutely adept at making cholis/(what we call blouses)... but i'm not sure how to explain this particular pattern to my tailor, as the kinds of corsets worn with sarees aren't really the same as the original ones... i 've seen a picture of one... it just looks like a fitted short top with spagetti straps and panels... doies somebody have any pictures that could be useful?

Hi sugarplum,

If you look in the 'special occasion' sections of any of the pattern companies(Simplicity, McCalls, Butterick, Vogue, etc), I think you would find many lovely patterns that are similar to what you want. Many of the dresses in that section are actually a fitted camisole/bustier type top and skirt, and are very elegant. If you can print off a picture, I'm sure your tailor would be able to create a pattern.

You can find an example or two on this page:
Simplicity special occasion (http://www.simplicity.com/index.cfm?page=thumbnail.cfm&cat=1&type=1&sec=0&id=9&StartRow=19)
Click on pattern 4990 to see what I mean. Most of these are probably longer than you would want but the the length can easily be changed.

My mother-in-law made something very similar last summer for a bride to wear with a sari(It was the outfit the bride changed into after the wedding ceremony and dinner...It was stunning). She made it without a pattern...which boggles my mind. The one she made laced up at the back, so there was some room for adjusting.

I hope this helps! Good luck in your search.
Take care,
Donna

thank you VERY MUCH!
just one more thing... are these corsets comfortable? have you ever tried these on? do they feel as uncomfy as their traditional counterparts?

Hi sugarplum,

What type of fabric are you planning to use? There are a lot of nice fabrics now that have a very small percentage of lycra stretch fabric in them, so that helps in the comfort value of the garment, without causing it to stretch out of shape.

I don't wear a lot of close-fitting garments anymore, but I think that if the garment is made to fit you specifically, then it should be fine...as long as you can breathe!
Take care,
Donna
