Does anyone have any suggestions for nice maternity patterns that are not the cutsy bags or collarless "quick" wonders of the big 4 companies? I feel like making myself a new dress and was less than impressed with the offerings available in the pattern catalogs. I am due in June, so I have some time to sew and wear a nice dress. Melanie

Why not just make a regular dress in a BIGGER size, where you need it. Make it to your bust, hips regular size, and add some to the middle (or wherever you need it most). Just measure (or have a friend help you), use some tissue paper or whatever you have handy, tape to the pattern and then cut it out. Or go to the 'larger womens' sizes and pick out something you like, size it down... Chrys

Here's a site for a "class" that teaches you how to convert your favorite patterns to maternity styles. I think you send them the $ by PayPal or check and then you download the file. Patterns That Fit You (http://patternsthatfityou.com/Maternity.htm) I haven't tried this, but it looks promising. Congratulations, too! Andrea

I used some patterns from New Look for my daughter that weren't maternity, but were the empire waisted ones that are long, and they worked well, but I did find out that I had to go up 2 sizes to make room for the larger bust, then also made the 'skirt' a bit wider, plus you have to make the fronts longer to compensate for the enlarged tummy. NL 6466 was her favorite. I also used regular t-shirt patterns and used a maternity pattern to get the width of the t-shirt right when I cut them out by laying the maternity pattern over the regular pattern and cutting out the regular pattern shoulder, neck and armhole, then the maternity the rest of the way down. Hopefully that all made sense!

The only maternity patterns that I liked that I had were from Vogue, I agree the others didn't quite cut it. Argh..... I just tried to find the one I really liked and they've discontinued it! Oh well, all in all I liked their line a lot. Ticia |
