Thank you Marilynn-I would never have thought of chalk ! This will work perfectly-not as permanent as the white pencil... great tips for getting it off the satin. I'm not sure exactly how to sharpen it to a point, but I'm sure there are smaller tailors chalks out there that will work ?
The beads I'm using are different sizes- from small (11) seeds to 3mm crystals, -2mm pearls, & several kinds of bugles & silver lined size 6, & 8 beads. Sequins also-various sizes-flat ones & cupped-3mm to 5mm. I had so much fun buying them I kind of went crazy-I'll have beads around for years, lol.
I can't imagine reconstructing an antique beaded dress-what a lot of work-altho I bet it was fun !
Thanks for your help ! I'll keep you posted on the progress.

My MIL uses chalk all the time, uses the straight white sticks that we used in school, and she sharpens then with a large pencil sharpener, or a little paring knife in a pinch. It really sharpens quite easily as I also now have my own box and sharpeners. I do recommend a rag cloth in your back pocket to wipe your fingers off after using it, especially if you tend to wipe your hands down your pant legs - not a good thing on black pants with white chalk! (Don't ask)

Hi Laura:
thanks for the info-I thought the old chalks we used to use would break if sharpened, but happily this doesn't seem to be so. I'll get some forthwith...
I keep thinking of you & the dress you made Kim-every time I have to rip a seam it gives me hope :-) I don't think I'll ever do as much altering on such an endless barrage of silk & satin again-just had to rip out the side seams after what was supposed to be a final fitting-too loose in the bust again. I swear my daughter is losing weight to spite me !
You mentioned the chalk on black pants ? I've had ivory threads just about everywhere -stuck to all my clothes & find them following me in the grocery store (from my shoes!).
Thanks for the tips & encouragement-I'm getting panicky.

Could you make a "sock" for your chalK? Then you wouldn't get it on your hands while in use. Just a thought.

Don't panic Sue! Some days when things were not going well, I'd call a girlfriend to cry on her shoulder for a bit. There was a lot of ' pin 3 times, check 2 times' ok - sew and alot of 'please please let this work'. I kept telling myself to remember this is a gift of love for my daughter and that helped too.
I even had my sister embroider a little label for the inside with a little message on it for her. I think I prayed more over this dress and this wedding than anything else. I'm sure this is going to be beautiful when its done, and you will be thrilled with how gorgeous she looks!!

I buy chalk pencils in the notions dept.. they come in several colors of chalk.. (some have 2 colors in 1 pencil.. They work great .. I have some that are blue on one end and white on the other.. and some that are peachy color that shows up great on the darker colors.. They have a gadget type of attachment on the end (takes place of the eraser, that has little plastic fibers like brush bristles ) This helps brush the chalk away when you are through..
