I'm looking for a pants pattern for myself for this great small-wale striped 100% cotton corduroy I got at Joann's yesterday. I want a waistband, zipper, and pockets. I don't care if it's a front or side-zipper as long as the instructions are good (I've never done a fly)! My body type is big bust, short-waisted, tummy pudge, and trim legs. I hate low-rise pants but I sure as heck don't want something sitting on my natural waist and going over my tummy, if YKWIM.

Anyone have any recommendations, please let me know. I wish I had a pattern store in town. As it is, I will have to wait until I can get out of town to find one...

This will be the first garment (besides Halloween costumes and reconstructed t-shirts) I have made myself in over ten years!

I don't do a lot of sewing with wovens, I'm lazy, and therefore prefer knits. So, when I do sew with wovens I like really good instructions, and it's a problem finding them. I would not recommend McCalls, as their instructions are in the terrible range for a novice, same with Butterick.

I do better with Simplicity instructions, but they are still not great. I'm going to try a Kwik Sew pattern next, I've just learned that they are made on heavy white paper and use ¼" seam allowance, both things that I much prefer. (I really the old Ann Person method of simple sewing)

You may want to look into the sewing for dumbies line of patterns. I don't think you are required to be stupid to use them:\ Also, while you're waiting to travel to a store, you can look patterns up on line to help you choose one.
Just go to Simplicity.com, or others, et. or google sewing patterns for many links. Good luck:)

I agree---Kwik-Sew has some great styles, and Simplicity's easy to sew patterns might be the way to start out. I already have a list of pattern numbers from Kwik-Sew's site to hunt down for myself when I get some $$. Good luck in your search and let us know what you find!

I have the Burda one-seam pants pattern and I like it a lot. I also have a one-seam pants pattern by Louise Cutting that is also great.

I like Kwik Sew for great instructions, very easy & quick! But I did a pair of Burda pants last winter that I really liked the fit on. The one thing Burda has is the European fit (more of a slanted back crotch on one!) that I truly need, something the US pattern companies don't have. Now the Burda instructions aren't near as easy as Kwik Sew! So if you want to try something first personally I would use Kwik Sew - then move over to try some Burda

You can look at Kwik Sew here:
http://www.kwiksew.com/
(I know a great Yahoo Coop for them)

Burda you can see through Sew Patterns site, you can go to Burda direct but the site is in German, although they do print the patterns in English !

Then if you ever want to take on sewing a fly zipper check out this video by Sanda Betzina at Threads. It is from her Power Sewing book. After watching the video, I have the book, I found that sewing fly zippers are a breeze!

Did you ever find a pattern? I've been wanting to work on the Simplicity 4965 (http://www.simplicity.com/index.cfm?cat=1&type=1&sec=2&id=6&startrow=1) for a while but I wonder if I'd be able to get the zipper and buttons without too much hassle. I have never made a pair of pants before. Let us know what you came up with---and if anyone knows anything about this pattern, please respond! Thanks!

You can find just about any type of pattern here. Have fun! I noticed the link to the Burda patterns, but this will give you a chance to go to the home page and shop all of 'em. Then you can buy the pattern where ever you like.

e50e, the problem in pants is not in the button or the zipper (or whatever closing you prefer.) The pattern instructions will get you through all of that. The problem with pants is in the fitting. I made that pattern (shorter version) for my teen and she loves it. I used a plaid fabric.

My best fitting pants project yet: Traced a pair of pants I loved and made my own pattern last summer. Try it!

Thank you so much for your response! I wanted to try the shorter version also. I have yet to figure out how to make a button hole on my machine so that was intimidating ;] I have a hard time finding pants that fit nowadays---I don't know what happened over the past 5 years or so but the majority of pants have a different cut that I find that doesn't quite work right with me. THis will most likely be a huge learning experience. If you have any tips or suggestions keep them coming. I might have to bother you later when I'm in the middle of the project. heh.

andreasews: I would like to see a photo of the pants. Did you by chance post them on another sewing/craft board? I recall someone doing this and seeing a photo sometime last year. I think the assembly part would be difficult w/o instructions. I'd love to try it. Are there any tricky spots that you could give advice on assembling?

Oh, gosh, I remember taking the pictures, and then I guess I forgot to post them! I'll find them and get on it again :) Warm weather's coming back and it'll be time to get them out of the closet again anyway! Tricky spots: the zipper placket was tricky. But I just sat there and studied the placket on the "model" pants, and I also looked at some pictures online somewhere, and then it came out just fine. Also, adding a pocket was tricky. The model pants didn't ahve a pocket, so I was dragging out other pants and had to draft a pocket based on them, and they were a different kind of pants, so that was tricky. But so worthwhile.
