Hello! Last night I made a pair of these Thai pants (http://www.mediatinker.com/blog/archives/008262.html#008262) which turned out great. It struck me that it would be nice to have some small degree of stretch in the tie. I tie them around my waist and as I wear them they either start slipping or, if I tie them super-snug, the knot becomes *very* tight! Is there any way to construct this tie where it has some degree of elastic stretch? Any help is appreciated.

Maybe you could take two short pieces of elastic and apply them to the ties on either side (perhaps one larger piece that straddles where they are sewn to the back of the pants). If it was me, I'd make the tie a casing and put the elastic inside but some people don't like casing and would apply it directly to the fabric tie. Any way you do that, you would want the elastic to end and leave a few inches of the tie string to, well, tie.
Pam probably has a better way. I'd listen to her.
But I think this would work.

I do this for the boys lounge pants. I cut a piece of elastic and sew the ties to either end and thread through the casing. I then secure the elastic at the back seam by sewing through all thicknesses and it will never come out of the pants. Kids are bad about pulling the ties out of the pants or not getting the ties tight enough. Great solution for that little extra stretch. You can add as much elastic as you want.
