Good Morning Everyone:

This will be my first post to this forum and I hope someone can help me. I am making a baptism gown for my granddaughter and am wondering if it is necessary to use a lining for the gown or will a slip be OK. The fabric is not see through. Thanks for any help. :nc:

Our churches do not do the infant baptisms so I don't know the proper attire. However, I always thought the gowns that had the lining showing during the ceremony were very pretty. You do often see the lining because of the way that the child is held.

It is not nessesary to line unless the pattern doesn't have facings or other edge finishes. The one all the boys in our family have worn is not lined. It was first worn by my Grandfather in 1898. All of the boys that have been baptized have worn it. 2 girls broke tradition & wore it also. It has work for 4 generations so far. It is 100% cotton with a slip to wear under it. You should have seen my DSL face when he found out his son was wearing a dress. I have continued the tradition with all of my girls wearing my first communion dress. Someday I hope to have a DGD to wear that also.

Thank you both for replying. I think I will make the gown with a ruffled hem to give the appearance of a slip.

MomofSix - how wonderful to have a gown that has been passed down for four generations.

Have a nice day to all

I just finished a gown. The outer fabric was satin and I lined it with broadcloth, making a built-in slip. That way it's soft against baby's skin, and not cold. I added lace to the bottom of the lining(slip) as well as the dress.
