I found an ultimate box on sale but it is a serial port connection. I only have one serial port and my scanner is on it, but I do have a usb port available. Is there some sort of converter that I can use to hook a serial cable into a usb port??

THere are powered USB hubs available. Call your local computer store and see if you can purchase a powered serial port hub. I wouldn't get it unless it has its own power plug. Most of the software won't run on an USB hub that isn't self powered, so I doubt that they could on a non-powered serial port hub. I don't know if there is such a thing, but I would think that there certainly could be.

I know at compusa you can take in your tower and get a port put in. The run about 40 for the port and some techs will do it for free.

There are no serial port hubs. You can get a serial port converter to a USB but they are only the 9 pin ones I can not find on and the techs at compusa have searched for a 16 pin one since that is what I need for one of my Dongles. So I just have them put in a new port for me.

My sil is a manager of compusa where we are from.

That's too bad because those serial ports are getting scarcer than hen's teeth.

I could always take my scanner off the serial port when I am using the ultimate box, which is what I do with the camera and the mp3 player. If I have to pay $40 to get a converter, then I may as well go for the usb ultimate box. poo poo poo. Computers frustrate me at the best of times, they are so darn piddeley

If you dont mind switching back and forth. I think you have the right idea. I had to do it cause it would have been 800.00 to upgrade my dongle to USB now it is only 400.00 still saving up. If I wait anylonger maybe they will do it for 100.00 LOL

And this is why I got rid of my serial port Magic Box. When I got a new computer, which had no serial port, only USB connectors, I went looking. I couldn't find anything that was economical to keep my old serial port Magic Box going on the new computer. So frustrated with it  I just bought the new Amazing Box with the USB connection. The nice thing is the old serial port had to be plugged into the computer with the serial port plus had the power plug. My new USB Amazing Box just has to be plugged into a USB, only 1 cord instead of 2 hanging around

After thinking long and hard, I have gone for the USB machine. I remember reading Chrysantha's posts, always buy the best you can afford, and that really made the decision for me. Now I am just waiting for it to come!!

That's wonderful! I think you'll be a lot happier! Later, if you decide to trade machines and software you'll find that part of the puzzle is solved (which is really nice.) If you have to figure in the price of the computer with the cost of a machine and software, it can become pretty discouraging!
