Whether you're a novice, an experienced sewer or somewhere in between, creative opportunity and inspiration abound. Our 2006 Creativity Contest features new award categories to encourage young sewers, expanded size ranges and special occasion dresses for both misses' and little girls' sizes.

Categories include:

Most Creative Use of Fabric
Most Creative Use of Trim
Most Interesting Wardrobe Concept (minimum 5-piece wardrobe)
Best Use of Pattern(s) for Special Occasion Wear
Shining Star Award (for ASG members ages 18-30)
Rising Star Award (for ages under 18, either an ASG member or sponsored by an ASG member)
The grand prizewinner in each category (excluding Rising Star) will receive a check for $500 plus a Simplicity serger. Three runners-up in each category (excluding Shining Star and Rising Star) will receive a 1-year subscription to Threads magazine, the spring and autumn issues of the Simplicity Pattern Catalog (the same one that's in the stores!), plus a certificate redeemable for five (5) Simplicity Patterns of their choice. The grand prizewinner in the Rising Star Award category will receive a check for $500 plus a Simplicity sewing machine. Three runners-up each in the Shining Star and the Rising Star categories will receive copies of "Simplicity's Simply the Best Sewing Book" plus a certificate redeemable for five (5) Simplicity Patterns of their choice.

And the best part -- all the winners will be honored at the ASG Conference 2006, in Arlington, Virginia, August 3-7. They will also be featured in the Fall 2006 issue of Notions and on both the ASG Web site and the Simplicity Patterns Web site. Complete contest details are available at simplicity.com or www.asg.org.

Mary I'm so glad you mentioned the ASG. Most people think that the organization is for advanced seamstress. No so. It's a lot like this group. We learn from each other. I'm at the moment trying to get a neighborhood group going around me. Our president of the chapter in New Orleans is trying to regroup the group we had before Katrina, because a lot of the ladies lost their machines and sewing things. A lot of the women moved out of state or away from the New Orleans area. It's a wonderful organization that is keeping an art alive through it's members. We had a membership drive right before the storm and people were amazed that you didn't need to sew well to become a member. Thanks for mentioning the group on your site.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

HI MARY,
JUST CHECKING, BUT AREN'T THE ASG CONTESTS limited to ASG members only? And membership begins at $40.00 per year?

It's kind of a shame that these contests aren'tpened up to the public sewer, with membership as a prize... just a thought. lou- :bluewink:

I'm not speaking on ASG's _behalf_, nor even in its defence, but I think the Creativity Contest is at least in part intended to attract new members. The winners and their entries are honored in a fashion runway show at the annual convention (near Wash DC this yr). See www.asg.org for more info about membership to see if it's a match for you. I joined a year ago, and it has been a wonderful experience for me. I've even considered coming up with an entry.... don't know yet.
Special to MotherInLaw's comments: Tell me more about the machines lost within your chapter. We're a national organization. I wonder if some of the other chapters can lend a hand. I mean, how many people have more than one machine and only use one or two of them??? I know that so many people lost "everything," and that everything means everything, but the rest of the world has a way of losing sight of so many details, being so far removed, and, well, comfy. For so many people, this single item can be a device for coping with so many many difficult changes. Let's discuss, either in forum or private message.

my best--

Andrea, This is my second year with the ASG and I'm also loving being a member of the organization.

There is so much distruction in our area, the parish I'm from is totally distroyed which means 68000 people are homeless there. Not one inch of the parish with the exception of the jail, was not flooded. Some homes got 20 feet some just 2 feet in house but never the less no one can live in their houses. Along with the smell of mildew and snakes and rodents it's unliveable. In other parts of our area, New Orleans the city proper, Metairie a outlying area of New Orleans, had hugh pockets of flooding, New Orleans getting more I think then Metairie but it's really bad. I spoke to the president of our ASG chapter and she says we lost a lot of people because they moved out of the area and are not coming back. I can give you her email address if you'd like and she can give you more info on who lost what and how many. A friend of mine with the Singer serger I spoke about is in her 70's and is having to rebuild her house because she has no other way out but to rebuild. A sewing machine like she had, Janome 10001, is not on her list of things to buy at the moment. She also just bought a little Singer to take with her to the guild meetings and to classes and she lost that also. Not to mention all the thread and notions everyone lost. I'm sure any help would be appreicated by the ones that lost all they had. I was fortunate to see ahead and took all my things that I could carry with me knowing that if a big one like they kept talking about came, I would not be in any position to replace my machines, that is considered a luxury. I'm sure glad I took mine with me. It has been my sanity here some days.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

hi adies,
hope i didn't offend anyone. i too was a member of asg, pacc, and a fewother sewing organizations for some time, as well as formerly attending the annual OS&C expo and taing seminars. Since being diabled and homebound, however, it's been frustrating to discover the number of organizations which cater mostly to members in attendance. since i can't travel any longer, tho i still love to design, it's disheartening to be unable to show my design ideas publicly simply since i myself can't attend.
yes, i realize that i can still join many guilds as a non- attending member, but half the fun of these groups is the comaradary and there's little of that for non- attending members.
gone are the days when sewing contests wer open to sewer's and general enthusiasts. and while that pobably dates me a bit, i realize, now that my situation has been as such for 17 years, it's something i personally miss.

i do still enjoy many of the online sewing sites, asg.org included, and find the projects are cute and can insite ideas. that'swhat seing isall about i believe. but i did want to clear up the fact that contests aren't open, rules the regs/ rules have changed. strange how one situation can be equally viewed. when a member and active, i found the contests a benefit; since no longer able to be an active member, i find then a ban to non-members. the people i feel for the most are the young mom's who don't have the money or time to join as of yet, or the teens who are considering sewing, but find $40.00 a year to be a significant obstacle.
hope i didn't hit anyone's nerve:)

SEW on!

Yes, you have to be a member to join the challenge. I would invite comments on those who have lost their machines. Many would benefit from having another to help cope with everything.

It is something that never crossed my mind, and it should have.

Well, you know what, Mary? We were just talking about ths in private msg's today--This fall, the need was for basics--staple foods, a dry place to stay, something to wear... The time is just now coming up for this kind of rebuilding.

Lou, I hadn't noticed your post earlier--You're considerate to be thinking of our feelings. Nobody's knickers got twisted, so don't you fret!
ps: are you the same Lou that I remember from aol ("still on the potter's wheel").
