Does anyone know how I can make a bedskirt shorter? One of my co-workers has a bedskirt that drags on her floor, and she wants me to make it shorter, and I remember I had one time found a web page that showed a really easy way to shorten it by cuttting down the center or something?? If someone could help me, I'd really really appreciate it. Thanks Anastasia Beaverhousen

Cutting down the center...I hadn't thought of that! OK, I just got done imagining how to do it, all ready to tell you just how it works, like a know-it-all, and I can't get it. I think if you cut it down the middle and then sew it back together, shortening the skirt by making a big seam allowance, a) The sides will be shorter, but the part by the foot of the bed will still be too long, and b) the part by the foot of the bed will be too narrow for the width of the bed now. This method should work fine if you're altering a larger size skirt to fit a smaller size bed, but it won't work for simply shortening, which you'd need if you were merely putting it on a lower bed. I think the easiest way is to simply re-hem it. And if it's a lace, which wouldn't lend itself to a hem, then remove the skirt from the flat part that goes under the mattress, cut off some excess, all around the skirt, and then sew it back on. Good luck!

Thanks for your help. I kinda figured that I would just have to hem the entire thing, but it is for a CA king, so I thought I might be able to take a short cut or something... But oh well. I just found this website, and it is the most fabulous thing I have ever seen!!! I'm so excited that I found this place!! Thanks again..Monique

Glad to have you. But hang onto that other technique in case you choose to use the same skirt on a smaller bed. Another shortcut: Put that California King bed on stilts! A half dozen bricks might do the trick.

There was a queen size bed skirt on sale in the colour that I wanted for my spare room. But I have a double bed...so bought the queen size and I sewed a seam down the middle of the bed skirt...this brought the skirt up on the sides. Then I took a small tuck along the width at the end that is at the head of the bed to make it a bit shorter in length. So I ended up with a seam down the centre of the skirt at the foot of the bed but it was a plain blue skirt and it isn't even noticable. Don't know if my explanation is very clear...but this worked for me. TTFN from

What about???...... starting at the top on the wrong side, in the flat part of the bedskirt, taking a tuck and continuing around to the other side at the top. Top stitch the free edge of the tuck so that it will always lie flat.
