I'm still very inexperienced in doing machine embroidery, taking baby steps to get started. My youngest step-son wants me to embroider his college's logo on a windbreaker he has. It's a nylon-polyester type of fabric. I plan to use a cut-away stabilizer for the backing. Should I also use one of the topper stabilizers that's water soluable? I have one shot at this to get it right, so it's very important for me to understand what I need to do to make it work and look right!

Many thanks in advance for any input, suggestions and instructions you may send my way!!

Cookie, you may not legally be able to do that logo. Most are trademarked or registered logos. Many colleges are making really good money prosecuting people who copy their designs. I'd do a little checking before I do it. My husband works for a school that will give permission for personal use, but you just might want to check rather than step into a place you don't want to go.

As for the windbreaker, unless it has a nap (and I don't think it does), you wouldn't need a topper. It would just be in the way. Your biggest problem will be in the layers. Use 505 or similar spray to hoop the stabilizer and the lining because the lining can walk during the design.

Thank you so much Pam, that is exactly the info I was looking for. I'm not too sure if the windbreaker has a lining yet, kidder still needs to bring it to me. I'll be sure to have him check with his sports coach to be sure it's okay for us to this for our own personal use. He's just transferred to this college and can't afford their ridiculously high prices for logo wear (!) but wants something to wear to his bowling and golf matches when he starts competing.

Ladyslopokes you will be fine using the logo for your personal use, you just wouldn't be able to sell a product with the college logo on it.
Let me know how the windjacket works, it's funny because I am doing the same.

Please tell me who makes this spray and where I might be able to find it. I have been looking all over town and the internet with no success! I see it being referred to in many threads here....I'd love to be able to get some.

Many thanks in advance! Cookie

OESD sells it and I think it is their product. Here are a couple of links. I'm sure that it is available many places. It sounds expensive but you spray a little on the stabilizer so it lasts a long time. My dealer calls it "spritzing". If you spray it too heavy it doesn't wash out as well.

Sulky KK2000 is a spray too...but doesn't smell as bad and doesn't make as much of a mess on your hoops. Can be found at Joann's, Wally World, anywhere Sulky is sold.

Well I did two new windbreakers of mine today...they came out beautiful...
Here is what I did...and I do NOT suggest you do it my way...its just me and how I do things different but if you ruined a jacket I would feel so bad...ok...I pressed the wrinkles out....hooped it with a med weight cut away....I made sure the flannel lining was smooth in the hoop with the top nylon layer...then just to be sure..I smoothed out the top nylon layer and at the inside edges of the hoop I straight pinned to keep it smooth....so it wouldnt shift in the hoop while embroidering....I did not use any spray....I just dont like them....I did both sides of each jacket.....they turned out great....the lime one I did a delicate flower spray in a deeper lime leaf and lavendar flowers...and on the lavendar jacket I did the lime spray of leaves and the dark purple flowers...I am really happy with how they turned out..I think maybe I was successfull because the pattern was not heavy...but a large delicate spray of flowers...if it was a heavy logo it would most likely have been a different story...ok...thats it...just thought I would share with you all....:) Ria

Cookie...I will be very interested in hearing how you did yours because I may have to do one in the future with a heavier logo and I am not real sure how I would do that one....thanks...Ria

When you said something about items w/college logos, I remembered I have seen numerous items on ebay (like handbags, etc) with college logos embroidered on them for sale..is that copyright infringement as well?

Many things on E-Bay are not as they seem and many things that are sold on E-Bay should not be there. I'm not going to tell you that everything is illegal but many of them are. It depends on if they are selling with permission from the team/school and what kind of permission they have to make/sell them, where they got them, it the logo is trademarked (most are) or licensed.

I know that a lot of people say that if they are doing it for themselves, it is fine, but I don't want to try to explain where I got something and why I thought it might or might not be legal. It is my personal opinion that it is better to err on the safe side. A lot of people are being hounded by the embroidery collition and they are paying.

If you have someone going to a school and want to do an embroidery project for your relative, it doesn't hurt to dash off a letter and get permission. You'll sleep better and have something to back you up if someone asks. If you intend to sell it they expect and have rights to receive royalties. Often you have to pay up front for that priviledge. Don't think that just because you live in the back hills some place that no one will notice. I've heard of people being hauled into court that you would never believe would come in contact with the public enough to be noticed. I don't know if there is a finder's fee on those things or not but it sure makes you wonder.

Thank you Pam & Chrys for the info on the sprays. That gives me more options and new starting points. The logo is one that we were able to download and digitize, and since it's only going to be used for my step-son's personal stuff, I don't think there's going to be a problem with it. However, if he doesn't get it to me by Easter, he's gonna be outta luck, Big Time!!
