My dgd has made a change in her design wishes for the wedding dress I'm making. Which is absolutely fine, but it seems she has way more confidence in me than I have in myself!! I am making Vogue 2849 http://img.sewingtoday.com/cat/20000/itm_img/V2849.jpg With some modifications...no bow, coordinating embroidered satin for train, trim around bottom edges and bodice, higher back, and squared off bottom of front of bodice. Now the bride has requested a cap-like sleeve similar to this gown... http://images.della.com/wc/fash/dressimages/deil_839.jpg We'll probably use a chiffon-like fabric for the sleeves, with matching trim on the edges, unless someone has a better idea? My question is how do I go about drawing and cutting a sleeve like this? If I use the lighter fabric (rather than the satin of the rest of the gown, would it require a dart in the middle of the sleeve to shape it? Or would a modified rectangle with elastic on either side do the trick?? Or am I completely off base??? Thanks for any help you can offer. Sandy |

I think a modified rectangle with elastic would do it. Perhaps gathering stitch on the narrow sides to get the exact look. What kind of trim will you be using on the rest of the gown? I have made many bridal gowns and it seems they ALWAYS want changes! Are you talking about a straight-across seam between skirt and bodice, when you say squared off at the bottom of the bodice? Thanks for the input, Marilynn. Since we've been having such a difficult time finding a heavy plain satin and a matching embroidered satin, she hasn't picked out the trim yet but she's been looking at trims that will coordinate with the embroidered satin train. I may end up hand beading a lot of this dress. We'll see. One of the problems is that I am in Maine and she is in Rhode Island. There are almost NO fabric stores...especially with bridal fabrics..in my area. The ones near her are limited in what they offer. We've been having such difficulty trying to find matching heavy satin and embroidered heavy satin. Surprisingly, she may have found some satins that match at Joann's. I'm going to RI in a week and hopefully we'll get that problem solved. If not, we'll be taking a trip to NYC's fabric district. I know what you mean about the brides making changes. She's already made so many and I haven't even finished the muslin! It's fine though. I want the dress to be exactly what she wants. As for the squared off waist...rather than a 'v' or a scoopy dropped waist, she wants the front to be squared in that there will be a straight line going across with corners lining up with the pleats in the skirt..then straightish lines going toward and blending into the back waist line. Does that make sense? I'm really bad at explaining these things! Marilyn, you sound like you know what you're doing. PLEASE, feel free to tell me what you think and offer any suggestions you like. I'm open and hoping for some help here! Thanks again, Sandy |

I understand about the waistline seam now; you explained it very clearly. I do hope you find the fabrics you want at JoAnn's. They are quite helpful, at least most of the ones I have been to have been. I live near Houston now, although I go there as seldom as possible! Friendswood is adjacent to Houston on the big H southeast side (Hwy 45) and there are about 30 or so small towns that just run together here on both sides of that highway! Usually it is possible to avoid going into Houston. Houston covers more square miles than any other city anyplace, I think. Oh, my daighter's here, more later. MariLynn |

I had to leave, my daughter Lisa came to pick me up to go over to my daughter Shauna's who lives with her family just about 2 miles from me here. Lisa lives on the west side of Houston near Hwy 10 which goes to San Antonio and Austin, where I have a 3rd daughter. You understand where I had a a lot of practice on wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, and wedding cakes! I did a lot of wedding stuff when I was doing custom sewing. I wanted to tell you that I am always happy to answer questions about sewing and freemotion machine embroidery, as I wrote a book about that and also taught it. You can go any time to my columns that are archived here on SWN. Just go to Behind the Seams and I am the first picture. Just click on my name and it will take you to my bio and a list of my columns. Any that interest you, you are welcome to click on the title and read and /or print them out. MariLynn Johnson <email address removed for privacy> |

Wow, Marilynn! You are one busy woman!! I hadn't put you together with your articles, but I have read many of them before. We have some of the same interests. You have also rekindled my desire to do some hand embroidery. I used to embroider often as a teenager in the '60's and '70's..mostly on my hippie jeans, but also using hoops to create pictures on scraps of fabric. I have no idea what happened to those things! Anyway, I'm going to keep your email if you don't mind. If I've got another question for an expert, may I email you? Sandy |
