Hi, all. I am in search of a pattern for a basic gathered skirt. It's the first think I ever sewed, but we did not have a pattern when I made it waaaayy back when! These days, it seems the only styles I can find patterns for are bias-cut, slant-hemmed, rolled waist, or tiered. Anybody know of a pattern?
Or do I have to try and remember back to 7th grade!

This pattern is an elastic waisted, basic skirt. Hope this helps.

Thanks, but that is a little more ornate than the one I have in mind. As I recall, the skirt had one seam. We gathered the yardage together at the top, sewed on a waistband, and added a hook and eye to close it. I'm sure if I wanted to experiment, I could probably make it without a pattern. I'm just not well-versed in things like how to determine the yardage for the waistband, how much overlap I need for the hook and eye, and how much overall yardage it takes to make a gathered skirt.

I remember making a skirt like that in Home Ec but can't remember how many yards or anything.

Have you tried checking out the thrift store patterns for an older one. I used to have a pattern like that, but gave them to the thrift store!

Judy,
I think I remember the ratio being 2 1/2 times finished measure for nice gathering.. I would make the skirt in 2 pieces , a back and a front.. To start with, cut the waistband a little longer than needed . (you can always cut off the excess) I like the underlap to be about 2 inches to allow for a little expansion if needed.. The one we made in home ec had a pocket in the placket so that we did not have to insert a zipper.. easy to improvise.. Just cut 2 squares and attach to top of seam on each side of the part left open for placket, then sew those 2 pieces together to make the bottom of the pocket.. make sure the bottom of the pocket hangs down longer than the placket opening or else do not ever put anything in the pocket while wearing the skirt.. LOL..
