How is rick rack supposed to be applied? Do you top-stitch it as a finishing touch, or do you sew it into a seam? I'm winging it here, and I've basted it onto my fashion fabric, planning to sew on the lining, turn it inside out, and somehow get it right. It seems that if I apply it this way around any curves, it will buckle when I turn it right side out. Votes of confidence, anyone?

there are different ways to sew rick rack. You can top stitch it going down the center, you can hand stitch & tack each point down & you can sew it in a seam.

I've put rickrack around a childs outfit Butterick 3846bk and it didn't buckle anywhere, it was put in between the fabric and the lining turned out really cute.

Thanks :) I just got up from the sewing table, and it turned out nicely! It's a child's vest, in blackwatch plaid. I used a red lining fabric and balck rick rack, sewn into the seam, all around the armholes and all other edges of the vest. I really thought it would have trouble around those curves, but it lays nice and flat. I'll sit and do finishing touches on it tomorrow night, and I'll also hem the matching skirt. Cute!

I love rick rack on children's clothes - especially the jumbo sizes. But I always have trouble getting the rick rack in just the right place on the seam line to make it even once the garment is right side out. However, I have recenly discovered the joys of Wonder Tape - fabulous stuff - and I am ready to tackle another project and rick rack it out.
