Bill or Tom, I have an ad in a catalog I received from "Connecting Threads" that has a 65 page book for sale, "The Featherweight 221 and I".. in a nutshell says divided into sections covering complete maint. , repair, and restoration of the FW Sewing Machine. Says object of book is simple and Singer built FW to be maintained by its owner.. The price is $ 30.45 down from $35.00.. Would you advise me to order it?? I have a son who is very handy as a 'Mr. Fixit' and I will be passing this on to his family when I'm gone.. ( to be considered, at my age , 71) I cannot decide whether it would be necessary for someone who is good at trouble shooting as my son is.. I have never had to do any major maintenance on this machine.. Most detailed job was removing the plate under the needle and removing the lint from that area.. .. The locks on the case got hard to latch and unlatch, but DS fixed that in 30 seconds.. I would appreciate your advice as to whether I should order this book or not.. TIA Sew With Love

I would be very hesitant, Libby. I have not seen the specific book, but a service manual for the 221 is available free from some on line people/groups, and there are also Groups of hobbyists and OSMGs that will "consult" any time. If someone is going to really get into it as a hobby, the best bet is to take one of Ray White's 3 day classes and get some hands on experience from a great teacher. Bill Holman |

I agree with Bill. It may be a great book but I question the need when all the information is so readily available for little or nothing. I would find it very hard to come up with 65 pages to write about it even with diagrams and parts charts.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom
