I'm willing to guess half the people who post here will say that their favorite-ever purse was one they made! There are a handful of free patterns online these days, so try a quick search. Threads magazine had a 30-minute project (less!) showing how to make a fun little purse by folding a cloth placemat in a special way and using bias binding. Simplicity has a different one on their website, also with a placemat and also very easy. The Big $ pattern companies sell a number of beautiful designs as well. Let us know what you choose!

I have made a few purses. They are really quite simple. You decide how you want it to look and go from there. They have pre made handles are fabric stores, or you can order them online. You can of course make your own handles. Use one of the free patterns on the web and see how it goes and then let your imagination take over from there. You just have to be able to see where you will need stablizing.

I'm gonna try one from Indygo Junction. It is a bracelet/wallet type thingie. Really it is a fashion accessory of some sort but it can hold a bit of cash or credit/debit card. http://www.indygojunctioninc.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=243 MaryW

I like that Mary. It would be nice with a watch sewed to it as well, don't you think? Dorothy |

I recently started making totes and purses for my tie-dye business. I found a pattern I liked, then did some changes, then morphed into making my own designs. My big thing is pockets, so I make sure I put at least 2 inside, and on most I also have 2 outside. here are a couple: http://www.angelfire.com/retro/tiedyejudy/sku566.JPG http://www.angelfire.com/retro/tiedyejudy/southwest_tote.JPG Judy Sall Originals

I'm willing to guess half the people who post here will say that their favorite-ever purse was one they made! I don't really agree with this, Andrea. My favourite purses, bags and wallets have, unfortunately, been the most expensive purses and wallets I have owned. I like leather purses, the softer the better but they get shabby quickly. When I find such a purse or wallet I can't live without and it is wearing out, I study how the bag is made and then make a pattern up based on the design. As others have mentioned, purses, wallets, and bags are not really hard to make (compared to something like a wedding gown or suit), the biggest problem is finding the materials. There are now more online sites selling findings. Fabricland, here in Canada is currently selling purse making findings. I have even, occasionally found leather and made purses. The best purse I ever made was made of ultrasuede and the design exactly the same as a leather purse that a purse shop owner told me was the most popular design they sell. I do like fabric tote bags and have many of them, some made, some purchased. *~*~*~* Nancy*~*~*~* " I try to take one day at a time - but sometimes several days attack me at once."

I bought a pattern originally to make a few gifts. I have since made my own patterns and sizes. I have recently been asked about one with a flap, so that is my next try. I also designed a pattern for a wine bag, which is really popular since I live in wine country. So find something you like and go from there. |

Check out www.craftster.org. It is a forum that thousands of crafters frequent and post tutorials in a lot of different craft sections including bags, purses and wallets. I highly reccommend it. Save the Planet -- One bag at a time! www.sammade.etsy.com

I haven't made any but here is a site that has some free patterns http://henriettashandbags.com/Craft_Ideas.html I love the messenger bag on that site. My 14yo daughter has been wanting one, so I'll try that pattern. I might make one for myself too. My daughter thinks it's funny that IF I buy a purse (I usually make my own) I have to "try it on". I put it over my shoulder to see if it's comfortable. Maybe that's why I prefer fabric purses. She thinks I'm the only person in the world that does this. |

Yep, me too. It's gotta be put on my shoulder to see how it feels. To often it looks good hanging from the hook but straps are too long or size is too big, etc....

I agree with this -- I got a cute purse as a gift, but the strap is just the wrong length -- too long to carry in my hand, too short to get into the darn thing if I put it over my shoulder. I would prefer something a bit longer so I could at least open it without taking it off my shoulder! But it is a very simple design -- kind of like a smaller version of the hobo bags I'm seeing. I bought some fabric to make myself a giraffe print purse..so we'll see how that goes!
