Lay your closed book down on its backside. Measure around the book from the front opening around the spine and to the back opening. To this amount add 1 inches for ease and add another 1 1/4 inches for the seam allowance top and bottom (I always use 5/8 seam). Measure from top to bottom and add the same, 1 inches for ease and 1 1/4 for seams top and bottom. From this amount you will cut 1 lining and 1 fabric. Depending upon how stiff you want your cover, you may also want to cut interfacing or batting. If you use batting, you may want to add another 1/4 inch to all these pieces for ease. If you wish to have outside pockets, you can split the outside cover near the top and add a zipper across the cover(s) and recut the cover to fit the match the previous measuments. If you plan to use outside zippers, you will need an extra lining piece. You will treat the lining(s) and batting and the outside cover on a book with a zipper as one piece. Pocket zipper. If you want an outside pocket zipper, place one piece of lining facing the wrong side of the outside piece and baste them together. Wrap them around the book, centering them at the center back spine of the book. Mark your cover with a pin just after it turns toward the face of the book. Remove the cover and duplicate this on the back. Sew the single piece of lining and front/back cover(s) at the bottom of the zipper pocket(s) all the way across the book from front to back on this mark. This will keep pencils or whatever from falling under the spine of the book and getting caught. Inside pocket. The inside pocket is where you stuff your book cover. It is about 3/4 the width of the book inside flap. I usually just use the same pattern I used for the cover and fold it so that it is 3/4 the amount plus side seams. That way I don't have to remeasure the top to bottom figure. You will cut two of these on the fold for the front and back inside cover pocket/book retainer. (Opt) Apply interfacing, if wanted to the inside lining of the cover, and you may also interface the pockets if needed. I don't usually do this unless the linings do not have any body. Now you make a sandwich. You will put the (opt. zippered & lined) front cover, optional batting, Inside lining (wrong side out) and the inside pockets together in a stack. Baste around the outside edges. If you wish to piping or lace on the edges, this is where you apply those. Baste them in at the 5/8 seamline. You will be using one long piece. I usually start and stop them at the bottom back spine of the book. If you have opted to include a handle in the seams. It is added AFTER the trim so that it does not cross over the outside of the trim. If a handle is applied at this point, it is usually a fabric handle. I usually cut two strips 2 1/2 inches wide, fold in the center and fold again to make these handles. They should attach about 1/4 of the way from each end of the book and stand away at a comfortable amount. These amounts vary according to size of the book and personal preference. Don't make them tight against the book though because they don't look as nice and they tend to pull the book cover. The directions for using a webbed handle on the outside are a little more complicated. If you want that, I'll explain it in another post. Believe it or not, you're about half way home now. Zipper section. The hardest part about this is the measurment of the length. Measure your book again. start at the back edge of the spine and the edges of the BOOK (not the pages). Measure around the opening and to the other back edge of the book. To this number add about 4 inches. THis is the length of your zipper. I like to use zippers by the inch for this, but you can use just about any zipper. There are advantages to zippers by the inch because they are so flexible in terms of length. Width of opening. Measure from top to bottom the opeing size of the book. Add 1 14 inch to the opening width. You will cut two pieces of fabric this size. Fold the fabric in half and press. Place your zipper close to one piece of folded fabric and attach with zipper foot. Repeat for the other side. Turn your book cover wrongside out and fold your book cover in half and put a pin in the top center and bottom center. Center the zipper section in the middle of the cover, matching the center of the book cover with the center of the zipper. Do not attach the first 2 inches (or so) of the zipper section to the book, let them hang loose. You do not attach the zipper end portion at this point. You will start sewing where the back or front attaches. Sew the back of the book from top corner to bottom corner. Repeat with the front. Turn your cover and lay flat. At this point, the cover is as open as it ever should be. Put a pin in the center of the zipper with the cover flat on the table. Mark the zipper at both ends. Open the zipper end so that the pull is inside the book opening. Attach the zipper opening to the opening of the book cover, pinning it together so that the pin is even with the seamline. This will allow your cover to lay flat. Once the zipper is sewn in and the ends have been caught in the seam you can finish the inside seams. I usually use a serger. You may also use a bias tape and wrap them or you may zig zag the edges. Your cover should be finished at this point. pam

I'm sorry, the handles are not very clear. Take your strip and fold in the center and press with an iron. Open the strip and fold each unfinished edge to the inside center. Press again. Now stitch down the open edge near the fold and then stitch near the fold to match. Attach your handles to the book cover. pam
