I have a friend who has recently purchased a queen sized bed with what sounds like a very deep pillow top. Her current queen sized sheets are too short to fit down the size of the mattress and under. Her husband is a very restless sleeper so in the morning (every morning) the bed is a mess. She wants to add fabric to the sides of the sheet to extend the length and stop this problem. Anyone ever done anything like this? If so, she's thinking a seam at the edge of the mattress with an insert of fabric is the answer. What does everyone think?

This will sound like a radical suggestion, but consider my age, and listen.. There were not always fitted sheets in this world.. Tell your friend to buy flat sheets and make the bed the old fashioned way and use 'hospital corners' and they will not pull out from under the mattress.. Or check to see who makes the queen size for (oversize mattresses).. the newer ones..

Libby - You may remember that for some time over time I have been asking how to make fitted sheets in the manner that new sheets are made with an angle at the bottom of the sheet rather than seamed at the corner. I have king size sheets I want to fit onto a double bed. Of course, if one did a hospital corner on the bottom it would work in making the pattern! Here I am a nurse and a nurse educator and never even thought of it. I do 'tuck in' my top sheets that way when not using a duvet. Mind you hospitals for many years have had fitted sheets. I found that only students coming from boy or girl scouts had any idea of what I was talking about when talking about 'mitering the corners'. FYI - I started my independance before fitted mixed poly cotton sheets or coloured sheets were available. I still have all those old sheets put away on a shelf (and used for a variety of household activities) yet have worn out I don't know how many newer sheets. *~*~*~* Nancy*~*~*~* " I try to take one day at a time - but sometimes several days attack me at once."

Libby Your idea is great except that she doesn't want to buy new sheets. These are recently purchased sheets. The bed was updated without changing the actual mattress top size. The sides are just deeper. Jane

Seams like a lot of work to me. Why not get some sheet suspenders (http://www.sitincomfort.com/shsu.html) or something like that.

Yes, Gina, I had that thought after I closed the computer down, also.. I have some of those in my linen closet, but haven't used them yet.. I bought them for my day bed.. Its covered 2- 4 feet deep in fabric stash, and nobody can even sit down on it.. LOL
