I'd like to start to do some home decor sewing - mainly practice for our new house. I have a glider (rocking chair) with a matching ottoman. I'd like to cover the ottoman cushion with new fabric. It's attached to the wood though. How do I measure the cushion so I purchase enough upholstery (sp?) fabric? Do I measure seam to seam and then add some? Do I measure around the edge of the cushion? I'm going to add elastic to the edges and fit it on that way.
I'm also going to re-cover the throw pillows on the couch. I was going to measure those from seam to seam and then add some. Instead of doing a zipper I may do just a basic envelope style with a button closure.
Any suggestions or type of fabric would be enormously helpful! Do I have to use upholstery fabric? What type of needle would I need to use in my machine?
Now if I can just find the time in between all the packing........dh's way of packing would be to throw everything into a black lawn bag and just lug it down to FL!

Hi Maureen, this is a useful site for you http://www.alternative-windows.com/cushionindex.htm for help with your cushions. You should be able to get ideas for measuring both types - look under box cushions for you ottoman type measurements and the other type really depends on what you want...
For the Ottoman I would use uphostery fabric, and make sure it is scotchguarded - for the throw pillows it all depends on the look you are going for and weather you want them to be washable or not.

Since my almost 3 yr old dd is a little bit of a Marvin and likes to put the pillows on the floor and lean against them like her daddy, they would need to be washable. The covers on the throw pillows are like a micro suede so it's not too easy to clean even though the store said they were scotch-guarded.

Use a sham type cover (fits like inside with one side overlapping the other....open). I have bought some polyester suede cloth and covered some large European pillows with that, looks very nice and it is washable. I've even done a little embroidery on the pillows for looks.
