Since I am moving across the country next week, I need to make a decision regarding which sewing items I can take. We'll be in a corporate apartment for up to two months so I want to be able to sew a little during that time. Obviously, I'll take my sewing machine and serger with me and a few patterns (how do I choose???? :whacky: )--but hubby says I have to only take the "bare minimum" sewing supplies. Since you ladies always have such wonderful ideas, I wanted to get your input as well. :bluesmile

What would you consider the "bare minimun" of sewing supplies that I will/might need? (I hope my stuff isn't in storage for 2 months, but that is a possibility)

Thanks!

First, keep your seam ripper. Next, scissors, and basic colors of thread. Not every color. Pincushion, hand sewing needles and maybe buttons for repairs. Hmm, let me see, what else?

A place to cut your patterns (table whatever), a place to put your machine (could also be a table, desk or folding "something").

1 sharp pair scissors dressmaker size. Clippers or smaller scissors for machine side (opt).

1 pin cushion or container with pins

1 seam gauge

1 measuring tape

Thimble (if you use one)

needles

1 seam ripper

1 pkg tracing paper/wheel (if you use these)

If you trace your pattern, whatever you use for that

opt rotatry cutter and mat

1 pack assorted hooks

1 pack assorted snaps

depending upon your patterns, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1 inch elastic

one to three yards of interfacing. It will be warm weather, so pack your heavy "stuff". You may need light to mid weight, (sewn or iron in).

If you have zippers to pack, save out 2 long white and 2 long black, perhaps a red or blue to take along with you. You can always cut them down. (May save you money in purchases later.) Threads to match (if you have them).

Check your pattern for covered buttons that you might be packing..this time of year (doubtful).

Sewing machine all attachments and extra needles

Go through your patterns and look. Do you need an Easter dress? Think spring and summer. Put away all heavy patterns. Take a good pant or slack pattern or two, one or two cute blouse patterns and if you need them, a skirt pattern or two. Patterns will be on sale while you are gone too, so you don't need very many. If you make scrubs for work, one or two of those. Do you have a child? Something for summer for them. I would try to keep the patterns down to less than 10, as close to 5 as possibl

The only thing I haven't seen listed so far is the disappearing-ink marker. Maybe you don't use this, but I can't live without it! Also, your chalk, or whatever you use to mark on dark fabric.

And how can you sew without your iron? If you don't want to lug your ironing board, take a heat-proof cover of some sort that you can use to iron on a table. I've used a folded sheet for this in the past, but only to cover a small area.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about patterns. You can pick those up at Joann and Hancock for $1 at least once a month. That gives you and excuse to find the fabric stores.
Dining room tables and hardwood floors work for cutting out. So I wouldn't worry about a cutting table. The table works for your machines too.
4 cones of neutral thread for your serger. These can double as thread for your sewing machine. You can also pick up thread that matches your fabric once you get there.
Scissors
Seam ripper
Any gadgets that came with your machines, feet, bobbins and such.
Whatever you use to mark your pattern dots.
Think hard about which items YOU use on almost every project, those will be important items to bring along.
#1 important item to bring. The power cords for your machines. This may seam silly but many a military spouse has been hung up high and dry because the movers didn't pack the power cords with the machine. :whacky:

oooohhh Gina, you just gave me the chills as a military spouse planning a move!! I would have to think long and hard about what to take for a two month stint, may get back to you later on that one. But on our last move I had to explain to the movers my precious bernina was worth more than the TV set they were all drooling over (and harder to replace) :whacky:

All I have to do is tell a man that my Bernina is Windows Powered and they go NUTS. They may not understand sewing machines but they understand computers (go figure).

Better than that, leave the dishes, pots and pans behind along with the lawn mower, washer, dryer and vac. Who needs house work when you can sew?

You ladies are great! I only have a few minutes here but wanted to post a short note. My precious sewing machine and serger (and probably iron--plus some of the other essenial items mentioned here) are going in the car with me!

That power cord is important and my mom's almost got separated from her machine when she moved a few weeks ago.

We're not military, but hubby is a federal employee, so the move is similar. :bluesmile

More a bit later.

Those are some long lists of essentials, everybody! Mr. Toadusew is going to be cursing us in a couple of weeks when he finds out his winter coat lost in a battle with a bundle of sewing stuff!! haha Well, really, there's nothing on that list that you couldn't just borrow from a friend nearby. See ya soon!

I haven't been sewing for very long, so everything that I have in my sewing desk would quite probably fit in a large plastic bin, including my books! My machines and my desk--well, that's another story altogether! LOL :bg:

Dorothy, I love the suggestion of taking it all! :bg:

Those are some long lists of essentials, but I tend to agree... :bluewink: ...I had even thought of my tailor's ham, tailor's clapper, and seam roll.....

Of course, I guess you're right Andrea--borrowing from a friend nearby--for a very short time--might work. Yep--see ya soon! :bluesmile

Let's see--patterns--right now I'm mostly sewing for my grandchildren, but it's so hard to pick and choose. I think I'll just pick a few of my favorites. I also want to make myself an apron or two so that pattern will definitely have to go with me....Now, how am I supposed to get along without my sewing books?? :nc: I guess I'll just have to pick and choose from that box, too....

Hmmm....it's looking like Dorothy's suggestion of taking it all might be the ticket! LOL

I personally like the take it all idea too, I liked pam's list, plus if you leave something behind that does give you the excuse to go notion shopping!!
Enjoy the change of scenery!
