I appliqued a pair of jeans. I prewashed everything, then used fusible interfacing and satin stitched around the appliques. In a few places, the applique seems to be pulling away from the stitches. I don't know what the problem could be. Thanks for any help you might be able to offer!!! Jenny |

Hi 3monkeys and welcome to Sew Whats New. Applique can be lovely but pulling away does happen sometimes. The first thing I can think of is your satin stitching should always begin at the edge of the applique and go towards the inside of the applique. Maybe your stitching didn't start at the edge. Another problem is placement. If your motifs were placed on an area of stress this may be the problem as well. They just aren't strong enough to take stress from bending or stretching. Hope this helps. I should add this is an excellent source of good information and creative ideas for machine applique. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0806987073/sr=1-1/qid=1139418060/ref=sr_1_1/103-0565230-9408655?%5Fencoding=UTF8 MaryW

Maybe the needle was too large and it made larger holes and perforated the fabric so much that it's pulling away.

The placement was at the edge. Also, it wasn't noticed until after washing. I should have mentioned that upfront. I think it must be the needle causing perforation -- it was separating right at the place where the satin stitching met the applique. What would you ladies recommend for needle size and brand? Thanks! |

I would try a denim needle or a microfiber needle. They are very strong and fine. I always have liked Schmetz needles. MaryW

I was using a Schmetz denim needle. After looking at it closely, it is quite big. I think maybe it caused the holes??? I just got back from the fabric store and tried some Schmetz universal needles. I'll see how that works! |

Okay I'm just going to throw this out as another thought did you wash your fabrics? I simply ask because if you didn't, then when you did wash them the 2 types of fabrics would shrink at different rates. Whether sewing, and/or appliqueing I really like to make sure my fabrics have been washed & dried enough to remove shrinkage, just one less item to fight later.
