I am so frustrated with trying to find a pattern for an infant swimsuit. I gave up thinking I'd just buy one, all I could find was a Gap one for $45  I did use a pattern from the one Ottobre magazine I bought for an undershirt and pants and kind of remade it, but I'd love to make a little two piece for my 5 month old GD, with the little skirt. I guess I'm going to have to attempt to just create it and hope it works.

I do agree that Kwik Sew has really great to follow, easy to use directions & patterns, especially with swim wear. I looked at the Kwik Sew site, they have no swim wear for the babies. They did have one pattern for swim wear for toddlers, pattern 2512 (http://www.kwiksew.com/Patterns/P2501_2550/2512.cfm), but it is a one piece not a 2 piece. Now if you didn't want to completely remake the wheel, since the sizing starts at 1, you might be able to use the size 1, then turn the one piece into a 2 piece? It would already account for the negative ease needed, etc. Just thoughts for you Laura! Haven't seen swim wear patterns out yet at the other major pattern companies! I was looking yesterday trying to plan summer sewing for my 6 yo dd.

I was just checking out the Jalie bathing suit patterns yesterday. The nice thing about them is that I can make suits for everyone - they come with 22 sizes in one package. I have heard only good things about their patterns but not sure how small the smallest size is.
It makes me sick thinking about the price of bathing suits! I plan to make them for me and my two girls so the pattern should pay for itself (12.99 US but they are having a 3 for 2 deal on). And if I have another girl (I'm due June 30) then I'll get lots of good use of it. I've sewn with lycra before but not a bathing suit. How hard can it be, right?
Anyway, they have a few different ones but no skirts that I remember. You could easily add one though. You'll be making her suits for the rest of her life! What a good grandma you are.

The Jalie patterns start at size 92 Euro, relating to age 2, so still not infant. The Jalie patterns do have great fanfare, great fit, etc. The only thing I was told by other that had made many swimsuits when I decided to give my had at my first was that Kwik Sew has better directions for the first timers :bluewink: Another tip that was given to me that is not on any pattern instructions sheet - try using wooly nylon extra as your thread it will give better stretch with the lycra & elastic. I'm have to make new swimsuits this year too, I made a bunch year before last, got me through 2 summers, see if I can do it again :bluewink: Also here is a link to a lady, Debbie, who runs a Yahoo Coop patterns, here Kwik Sew on constant, Jalie run monthly, she is really great - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kwiksewcoop/

I wanted to add that if you do use Jalie that they are usually good with customer service. That is if you have problems with their instructions while making the garment, email them, someone will email you back to help you out! :bluewink:

LauraM,
I've never used the wooly nylon before, is it only for the serger? If so, do I need 4 spools (I have a 4 spool serger only)? I'm no expert with my serger at all, I only use it to finish seams if I have to. And my mother misplaced the manual (it was hers) so I've only figured it out by trial and error.
Thanks,
Jen

Hey Jen! I use wooly nylon in the upper looper, makes for a very soft edge especially on the swimsuit. I went and got some fabric, then used an undershirt and pantie pattern that was in Ottobre Fall 05 issue, Kwik Sew also had close to the same thing - a onsie with sleeves, so I compared the sizes, then taped the top and bottom together as if making a onsie, cut it out, and it worked quite well, Then I got excited, made another one but this time cut the top and bottom out seperately, made a flounce skirt and sewed it in between the top and bottom layer, It came out really cute too. Then, I made one more, made the top shorter, like a sports bra, and made the bottoms, but used a different pattern (6 month size) this will fit her when she's two I bet. After all that, I have decided I really really like the sizing on the Ottobre patterns best of anyone. Good thing my daughter doesn't mind me experimenting with ideas on the adorable granddaughter!!! She wore her new one with the skirt today at her swimming lesson, and she sure was cute. But I still don't get why they don't have bathing suit patterns for little ones, there must be 15 babies in her class and people have babies all the time.

Laura, wow you are fast! I don't remember that particular pattern in the Ottobre fall '05 so I will look it up for sure. I too have been very happy with the sizing of the clothes from Ottobre, anything I've made has been perfect from them. Post a picture of those little bathing suits!!!
At least there was no snow here in Vancouver for your drive in yesterday, sure is cold (for west coast hee hee) but beautiful sun. Arts 'n Crafts for 2yo and me this morning. ciao,
