After wrassling with darts on the last couple of garments, I've decided to ask for help. NONE of my sewing books deal with that goofy little bubble at the end of the dart except to say don't make one. No matter what I do I can't get the wretched thing right!

Right now a toga sounds like a good idea. :bang:

Has anyone else had this problem, and how did you solve it?

Thanks!

I just read an article in the current Threads magazine on darts. I actually thought it was to address that bubble thing. Two techniques offered. Maybe that will help.

I like you get the bubbles from time to time. Sometimes it just requires an extra puff or two of steam. Other times, no matter what, I still get the bubble.

Stop just shy of the end of the dart and tie the threads together at the end.

I guess I'm backwards....I always mark the front with a pin, pin the back of the dart, start sewing from the front (pointed end) and end at the back (seam end). So I actually start sewing BEFORE the dart and come into it, if you know what I mean....like quilt piecing. I never have bubbles. When ironed my darts always lay flat. (but then I'm an unusual sewer... :bluewink: )

I think some of it is finding a technique that works for you. Some sew it from the seam allowance until just the end then tie off (I do). Some find it better to sew from before the end to the seam allowance. Then I've seen where some found that putting a slight curve to the dart works better for them too. I would get out some scraps of fabric, test out some different methods, see what works best for you, find your best technique :bluewink:

Thank you, everyone, so much!

Snow blankets everything today and I have lots of scrap fabric. I'll practice all of your suggestions. I'm especially curious about sewing from the pointed end of the dart to the wide end...I've not heard of that one until now :)

This was just covered in a Sewing with Nancy show I saw the other day.. She says she starts and lines up the dart in a straight line from beginning to the point in a straight line before she takes the first stitch.. , then just guide the fabric .. I haven't thought of it in that way before, but I tried it and it worked well for me..She pressed the dart as is and then opened it up on a ham and pressed again.. I did that also.. Worked great...
