A local gift shop has asked me to embroider napkins, vests, aprons and other small ready- made items.
What are the pitfalls re copyright etc ? How will I know if the design is copyrighted or not? Is it even possible to embellish articles for sale without breaking a law or stepping on someone's toes ?

LIse, this is a good article on the in's and outs. Most digitizers are pretty good about letting you sell items as long as you don't sell the actual design. Just to make sure always email the person and ask, that way you have it right from the source.
