My niece just had a baby boy. I want to make some outfits or bids or something for him. I have lots of flannel. Can someone give me some ideas? Or some simple patterns of things to make. I haven't sewn for a baby in 33 years. Help.

Carolyn, You can make out of prefolded diapers burp pads. all you have to do is add some deco on top and bottom, fold the diaper in half long sides stay long short sides are halved. sew up on wrong side. Turn so that seam in now in the backside and then sew up bottom and top. They come out very cute. You can add some appliques if you don't have an embroidery machine. You can never get enough burp pads.

Do a search on google there are plenty of free patterns out there for babies.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

There are a lot of nice layette patterns in the big 4 pattern books. You can really have a lot of fun with this. Of course, burp rags are particularily good for working moms (seems like the twins always knew when it was about 3 min. before departure for work) are good. Fleece blankets, diaper bags, hooded towels, boppy pillows are wonderful. Matching sheets and comforters are good for the bed, I always like diaper stackers...don't know if others use them or not.

That reminds me, I made that little thing that goes in the car seat to hold the baby's head in place when they are new borns and it was easy to make. Also I made one of those little things that hangs on the bed that holds all the lotions and powders at your fingertips. It was easy. Like proper said the pattern companies have lots of layette patterns but there is lots on the internet for free also.

The head holder (head's up) was one of my favorite things. I had one for each car seat and both the swings too. They were great!

You could make receiving blankets out of the flannel - the ones I've seen in the stores are too small and very expensive. Burp cloths are great - 2 layers of flannel with batting in the center and bias around the outside - never enough of those!
Have fun!

Thanks for your suggestions. I got a deal on a Burda baby pattern. Has 4 cute outfits for .99. Also got two Kwik patterns for myself for .99. I am going back there maybe tomorrow if the snow stops and pick up some more.

Check ebay for patterns - my daughter recently got 2 little girls that she's going to adopt and we were able to get some Sunrise patterns for kids cheaply on ebay. They like to wear dresses so I've been having lots of fun sewing for them.

There's a free pattern I've used again and again on sewing.org It's a bib with sleeves. The moms just squeal over them.

I made my kids receiving blankets before they were born. I hated the store bought ones, thought they were to small. I also did a nice decorative yarn stitch around the outside.

Also another idea and pretty easy is a rag quilt.

Besides receiving blankets and throws I like making blocks, balls and pillows with baby's name, birthday, birth weight etc. sewn on the items.

I did the same thing as purselady-I just got some flannel and used my serger to serge all the edges. My grandson loved them (and so did my daughter!). The crib blanket was in a Sewing for Dummies pattern. It was 2 1/4 yrds, and instead of hassling with a 1/4" hem all the way around, I serged it first then attached baby blanket satin on to the 2 short sides. I've made three of them for my little guy, and he still carries them around like Linus from the old "Peanuts" cartoon strip! Gotta love the little ones!

Thake a 1 meter piece of cotton and 1 meter piece of cotton flannel. Then sew right sides together leaving a space to flip. Turn right sides out. Top stich around the edge. I always make this real quick and easy baby blanket for new arrivals. Usually I embroider there name in the corner of the cotton side.
