I've just started watching it--so far, so much drama and too little sewing! But I had a question for some one of you experts here...

One of the designers made a men's suit and nearly all the seams came out way puckery and rippled. Could this be a machine problem or fabric issue? What do you think? The fabric was a single ply pale grey cashmere and as a suit, it just looked horrendous. Or is this a problem of using the wrong fabric for the article of clothing?

I'm dying to know what you think. Thanks!

Here's the only pic I could find of the suit...

It could just be the settings were wrong for the fabric -- stitch length or tension or something. But you would think the sewer would notice before the whole suit was made.

Opps -- you wanted some of the experts to answer and that's not me.

I LOVE that show!! :bg:

That suit did look terrible, didn't it? Maybe if he had serged it instead of sewing it it may have looked better. I think the fabric acted like a knit. Michael Kors said it was "mushy" fabric (I guess that's a couture term? :bg:)

I didn't see the show. However, it sounds like wrong needle, wrong tension, wrong stitches. wrong stitch length.

I would never serge a suit, but many would and Green Dragon does certainly have a good point with the differential feed. However, I wouldn't even finish the edges of a suit IF it were lined because the less bulk in the seams, the better/flatter they would lay. For every seamstress there is a different construction method. As long as the end result if pleasing (inside and out), then the rest is just suggestion.

Sometimes they do the weirdest things on those shows. :monkey: I can't help but think it was done on purpose to either make some sort of point or denigrate the person sewing.

I saw that episode, too. It looked to me like it was only one side of the seams that were puckering. I thought maybe the tension was off in the bobbin or something. You'd think someone specializing in designing would know better. :whacky:

Probably the wrong fabric without a lining and not sewn well.....cashmere is soft and drapey...for a suit like that...whata joke. :bolt:

There are new episodes on Wednesday night at 10p but sometimes you can catch repeat episodes. Many times at 9pm (on Wednesday) they'll repeat the previous week's episode. It's a show that started out with 16 designers/sewers (some professional sewers, fashion school students, regular sewers - not one type of person) and from week to week, someone gets cut, depending on the project completed. I like to see the process of the sewing more than the finished project.

The people on that show are under ridiculous time and money constraints. They are taken to a fabric store and given an hour to shop (or less!), and they have to design and construct the garment in a day. It's never clear what time they start, but they always say, "Okay people, you have until midnight." Of course that's all part of what makes the contest exciting, but I'm always amazed that they do as well as they do under those circumstances.

But yes, sometimes seams pucker, sometimes they pop, sometimes the hems are pretty awful, and sometimes it seems to matter and sometimes it doesn't. Don't mind me; I'm just mad because the guy I was rooting for got eliminated.

And would somebody please slap Santino? Please?

Tonight is the last time someone will get eliminated - then the 3 left go to Fashion Week.

Don't get me started on Santino! I think he forgot to take his medication the last show. He's this season's Wendy. The producers are keeping him for the drama.

lol! I love that show! For me, Project Runway is truely a guilty pleasure. :bg:
I, agree, I really liked Nick. I'm sorry to see him leave.
And Santino, what an ego! I'm really surprised he made it this far. I liked his designs in the beginning, but they have not been that appealing lately. And his attitude really spoils it for me.
I was sad to see the first Daniel (from last season) go, and Diana (she was too cute--and talented). I loved the way she designed from a truely different perspective.
I'm really hoping Chloe and Kara make it to Olympus Fashion Week.
I missed last night's episode.... gotta wait for the rerun.
They are usually rebrodcast on the weekends, btw.

I record all of them on Tivo. Then when it's been taping about 20 minutes, I start up the recording. This way, I get to forward all the commercials, and I'm still done at the same time as everyone else who's watching it!!

I can't imagine having only a day and a half to complete a major project like the ones they were assigned, but I hope that if I ever got to that point, I wouldn't forget my basics--like iron as you go, and cut all the hanging threads. I'm amazed by all the wrinkly fabric and hanging hem threads...

Someone cut out Santino, please?

Most garments could be made in that length of time IF you paced yourself. I've comfortably made 17 garments in five days from measurment to delivery with no problem, sleeping 8 hours and preparing meals/eating with my family. I also had to drive to make the measurements (Monday) and pick up the pattern/fabric and notions, drive for the fitting (on Thursday morning), and drive to do the delivery (Friday) because it was a school choir.

Season 1 was a lot of fun and I enjoyed watching Project Jay (winner of season 1). The network is considering a series to show how he makes it in the fashion design world of NYC. Season 2 was fun also. I liked Daniel Franco and was sorry to see him cut. Nick and Andrae were very talented and I'm sure all of the contestants go on to bigger and better things. On Project Jay, Wendy Pepper was shown at Austin Scarlett's NYC showing. She mentioned that her marriage had ended ... what a surprise (not). In real life she might be nice but the show portrayed her as being a mean witch. Santino was nice on the reunion show. He was straightforward when he said that he did not come on to the show to make friends. He even was on Regis & Kelly. Guess he's the "star" this season. I find it entertaining and cannot wait until March 8th when the winner of Season 2 is revealed. The suit looked terrible because it was the wrong type of fabric and details like pockets in men's trousers were missing; buttonholes and buttons, etc. It looked much too feminine for a man's suit. Nick messed that up and that's why he was cut. He should have known better since he was a fashion design teacher. Enough of my soapbox. Happy Stitching!

My daughter and my DH started watching it last year, but I just started a few weeks ago. DH says he likes the fact that he knows so much about sewing from me. He said he probably wouldn't have watched it otherwise. My next purchase is going to be a dressform!!

It's nice that Chloe (from Houston, TX) won Season 2. Her evening gown show was stunning. I could imagine myself in a lot of those designs if they came in a plus size. Happy Stitching!

I didn't really like Daniels collection, but I wanted so bad for him to win. Santino really got on my nerves, but I liked his collection the best.

I actually liked Santino's the best too. I thought Daniel's looked more like things that women could actually wear day to day, but Chloe's looked like a prom collection from the 80's.

So upset: I wanted to try out for that show, but turns out my father works for one of the sponsors, so I'm ineligible! That would have been so much fun, even if I only got to try out.

I JUST WANTED TO SLAP SANTINO SO BADLY!!!!!!!!!
This guy is such a JERK!!!!!!!!! He went out of his way the whole show to be such a controversial designer only to play it safe with his runway collection!!!!
I do agree that his cottection was the best of the three on Runway Night.
He's all talk and NO action!!!!!

If you get to the Garment District they always seemed to go to "Mood" for their fabrics. Makes you wonder what kind of deal that store got from the Producers. It looks like a small, better quality fabrics shop. The second floor windows had the letters M-O-O-D in the window, so that IS the only way I would be able to find it. "COME DESIGNERS!!!"

"WHERE'S ANDRE??????"

Just because someone can design on paper doesn't mean that they can draft a pattern, select the right fabric(s)for the design, or even run a sewing machine, let alone adjust the settings for the fabric that they are using. I have worked with people who "sew" and don't even realize that something is wrong with either the fabric, the settings, the way they handle the material, or all the above. They think that if it's put together that it's sewn, not giving any attention to deal.

Many of the "designers" are comfortable dealing with just a certain design field or fabrics, so when something new was added to the mix many of them it seemed just had instant brain freeze.

I sure that they will still keep showing the re-runs of the show, I know I have seen it on Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays in back to back showings.

I am not usually one to enjoy alot of drama, which this show has but there's something that has me hooked! I mean, it's just fun to watch..
I thought, initially, the tension was screwy when I first saw the garmet..just my amateur thought..
