I was studying Joanne's lesson (http://www.sew-whats-new.com/quiltlessons/cutfabstrips.shtml) for cutting strips. I noticed that she has her ruler over the bit she is cutting off. Does it matter if you have your ruler on the bulk of the fabric or on the bit you cut off?

I'm not sure that I understand the question, but...If you are using the ruler to measure the width of the strip, then it would have to be over the part that is being cut. If you are cutting random-sized strips, then I guess it really wouldn't matter, as long as they are straight.
Take care,

My cutting mat has a grid on it and my ruler doesn't so I would be using the mat to measure. I am left handed and my cutting table is set up to where I can't easily just flip what she is doing. So I was wondering if it would hurt to have the ruler on the bulk of the fabric so I can cut on the left, or if I have to move the cutting table.

I may be wrong, but I'm left-handed as well and I have ruler over the bulk of the fabric, mainly because I have problems with cutting straight and I use the measurements on the mat as well. I also use the Shape Cut, because it helps me cut straight.

Well, I'm certainly no expert.

I don't recall where I heard/read this, but somewhere along the way, I was told not to use the cutting mat grid to measure. I also don't remember the reason. I use the grid on the mat to line things up, but use my ruler to measure...simply because someone, somewhere, who knows more than I do, told me to!

OK. You all can call me an idiot. I deserve it. I have a Shape Cut ruler. DUH. :re: I was getting all set to cut my strips with my regular ruler and happened to see it hanging on it's peg. Funny thing is that I spent part of a day last week cutting bias tape one by one. Well I have my strips for this quilt cut and am now going to go sew them together.
Thanks for all your help!

Many grids on mats are not true 1"
always use the rulers.

if you use the grid on your mats then you use those measurements for EVERYTHING, they may be only thread or two out, but that thread or two in the beginning can be a 1/4 inch in the end, ask me, been there and done that one :bluesad: even different rulers can through you loop or two in sizing :whacky:

Yes, I learned that the hard way too. I did an entire quilt top, cut a bunch of strips using the mat lines and some with the ruler lines. I couldn't figure out what was going on until I laid my ruler on the mat and realized they didn't quite measure out the same. I was furious!

Actually, the grid lines on my mat are quite thick, which would create 'inexactness' all by itself. That reminds me of my high school geometry teacher who insisted on a very sharp pencil to make the finest of lines...
