was gonna be a good one...well I was wrong.
My baby Sam (who was just a yr old in Nov) threw up this morning and I found a lump I swear wasn't there last wk. (we're paranoid about the ferrets now and check them over like we're vets). So we're off to the vet in the morning and I know whats she's gonna say...cancer, again. I haven't spent a yr since 2002, without a sick or dying ferret to take care of, or worry over.
My neighbor is gonna go with me...thank heavens for her..

I also got up to a dead microwave. It was fine yesterday. I used it once. I got it in Aug. (last yr). So I have to ship the stupid thing to AL, the closest repair shop (within 100 mi) and it's gonna cost me the same to ship it, as it did to buy it..now whats the sense in that ???

I'm very tired of the dying and dead...be they animals, people or appliances.
I really, really NEED that break...but I have a feeling it's never gonna come.

Ah Chrys, big hug to you! I can relate, I had a really crappy day too. After being so excited about going to day shift, now the union says no, they don't like the way things are set up, it happened too quickly and we need to look at other options, (which there aren't any of) and now I don't know what is happening at all with work, no one seems to have an answer any more. So, I went to my doctor, who's not happy about the condition I'm in physically, and she sent me for some xrays, which after spending over 1/2 hour getting xrayed this way and that I was in some major pain. Then I came out to my car, tried to call DH and he wasn't answering, so I sat there ready to cry, then he calls and I lost it completely. I called in sick today I just couldn't face it after a day like that. And then on the way home I stopped in at the store and my bank account is depleted, so that's that until payday, and we had company coming from out of town, three people to feed and not much at all in the way of food in the house for company. But I made it through, I still feel like crap, yet, tomorrow is another day. I'll be thinking of you lots tomorrow as you head off to the vet. If it makes you feel any better, you've been a great help to me in some of the things you've said here on the forum, lots of times I'll go to do something a different way, and then realize you were the one that mentioned it in the first place.

Thanks...yeah me and my big mouth...(fast typing hands)...well
it's not the MICROWAVE thats bad...it's all the outlets in the kitchen. ( I tried the microwave in different outlets)...yes I did look at the breakers, none tripped...yes I did look at the GFI, it doesn't seem to work either...
so it's off to get another GFI, but not to send the microwave away.
I'm now ready to beat my head against the wall...it's gonna look good against the white brick I'm sure... :bang:

Well you saved yourself BIG BUCKS not having to send it out, BUT you're going to end up spending it anyways. You'll be buying tons of Aspirin for your major headache you gave yourself from banging your head against the wall!!!!!!

Does the Vet think that there might be something in your house or neighborhood that could be causing the ferrets to be getting sick? Something like cleaners, sprays, a mold, plants. What about their food?

I hope that they can get your critters healthly and give you some peace of mind, don't like not see you happy :bluesad:.

I'll send you three fat purring furballs!!!!

Instead of banging your head against a brick wall (then you'll have to clean up all the blood) take a walk in the fresh air - clear your head. And NEVER EVER ask, "What else can go wrong?!" That's one question God will always answer.
I hope your day is going better ...

Actually it was a hair ball....yep...my paranoia (from having 5 ferrets die in 19, 1/2 mnths) reared it's ugly head and I just knew Sam was sick. He threw up and had a lump...so I gave him hair ball stuff (like you give a cat/rabbit), guess who got rid of a large lump of hair this morning in the potty box...yep...but I took him to the vet anyway..just in case.
He's fine..( I use the hairball stuff on'em once a week, but I guess Sam needed some more). At least the vet doesn't mind my paranoia..(she likes my ferrets)...
So all I have to do now is change my GFI. (and yes I DO do my own electrical work. I know how...I just get weird when 'things' die on me).
So I get to sleep tonight and go to Lowe's tomorrow...(and watch the men teach the little woman how to look for and find a GFI...of course by the time they get to me I'll already have one... :bg: )

I've been wondering the same thing as Sewhappie. Could it be something environmental?

It's more like they come from Marshall Farms, the biggest ferretry in the U.S. They're also inbred. Marshall Farms was in the news yrs ago for their 'test' animals getting out and mixing with the 'breeders'...well...no one but Marshall Farms knows the truth...but the truth is, Marshall Farms ferrets have a 90% chance of getting cancer, 85% of them only live 6-6,1/2 yrs. If you're fortunate enough to LIVE NEAR a 'family' owned ferretry, you get ferrets that live 9-10-11 yrs, cancer free...but as it so happens, the nearest one to me, is in PA...I live in FL...family owned ferretries DON'T ship, they have to interview you and make sure you know what you're doing before they sell you a ferret. (which is only right, they want a person who will take care of THEIR babies and you get a quality ferret.)
But have you noticed that in the last 20 yrs, all animals are getting more and more cancers. (www.petloss.com) Go there and read some of the stories.
Cancer is NOW the #1 leading cause of pet deaths....all pets. They're dying younger and younger.
Ferrets are a 'potato chip' animal...once you have one, you want more.
But I also caution people NOT TO BUY ONE...if you've never had a ferret, don't get a ferret because you think it's cute and you can leave it in a cage.
Thats cruel...you'd be put in jail if you did that to a child. Don't do it to an animal...any animal...

Kath (off her soap box now..) :bg:

btw Maureen...thanks, but I can't walk in the fresh air. I'm allergic to the sun, grass, trees, pollen, flowers, etc....I need a hazmat suit just to go to the store. When I go to the vet, I can't lean on the tables, the disinfectant they use, gives me blisters. I can't touch other animals I get rashes. (I get rashes from my own, but heck...it's easy to put up with at home.) I can't touch carts in the stores, it gives me a rash. I'm one of those thats going to be housebound soon, because of my allergies. And no...there isn't a treatment...been there, done that, for many yrs now... :bg:

Cancer is NOW the #1 leading cause of pet deaths....all pets. They're dying younger and younger.

I got myself banned from another forum for talking about this. But I really think it's important that people realize more pets are getting cancer because they're living longer.

It's only been since the 1930's that any animals are kept in the house. Before, they were exclusively outside (in America). Before, they were eaten by predators, poisoned, suffered terrible injuries, and died of all kinds of diseases.

Now, almost all pets spend at least some of their time indoors. And most are vaccinated, eat balanced diets of foods prepared and stored in sanitary conditions, and see a veterinarian whenever they're sick.

In the wild, a ferret or other small animal may only survive a few months whereas in captivity they usually live much, much longer -and with a much quality of life.

As I said, I got banned from a forum for speaking of this, because a lot of people are convinced the cancers are the result of being in captivity or being "over cared for". They aren't. They're the direct result of living long enough to get cancer. Responsible breeders, pet owners, vets, and pet food manufacturers are not to blame.

As with other animals, and people, susceptibility to cancers can be hereditary. Any time you buy an animal, try to get a copy of the pedigree & look it over to make sure the family tree has forks. I can't believe the number of animals -especially little ones like hamsters, ferrets, rabbits and such- that are inbred and cross bred. It almost guarantees that weaker genes are passed on, and that the animal will suffer from conditions that would be unusual otherwise.

And of course, there are no guarantees. The reason these small animals are used in cancer research is because they get it so easily -it's already there. They don't "give" a mouse cancer, they just wait.

Edited to add: I'm glad it turned out to be just a hair ball. I understand sooo well what it's like to lose a pet. I've been so attached to so many hamsters, bunnies, gerbils -even a rat- and they were just as special to me as any dog or cat. Here's hoping he continues to be fine for many, many moons. :)
