How do you change thread color on a Janome Harmony 8100 during a design?

When the machine stops, beeps, after the color is finished. You raise the needle, rethread with a different color, put the needle down and push the start/stop button.

I just learned this a while ago. I used to pull my thread back up and out by the spool (gasp!). Then I found out that you can really mess your tension up that way, so now I clip the thread at the top of the machine just before it goes down inside, and pull it out through the bottom by the needle. I figured it's cheaper to waste a foot of thread, rather than pay for getting the machine fixed. Now I do this with my sewing machine as well.
