Lately I have been noticing that my mouth is so totally dry, almost like my saliva glands have quit. I can't seem to drink enough fluid to get rid of that extreme dryness in my mouth and my lips feel like they are chapped all the time. All the water I drink does nothing but make me run to the bathroom all the time. Does anyone else have this?? Is it a post menopausal thing?? It gets so bad at night, that I start to cough and have to get up and get juice as water doesn't seem to do anything. I just finished seeing the Dr and I'm in great health, my blood sugar and cholesterol are totally normal. So, what do you figure???

That is one symptom I don't have. I have to drink lots since my hot flashes have me totally wringing wet and cold water (in my mind :monkey: )seems to cool me down.

Hmmm, you might try a humidifier, especially while you sleep. if that doesn't work, see your Doctor. perhaps some medication you are on could be the culprit.

Laura,
I think it is an aging thing. Are your eyes dry as well? I am like this, but I always attributed to the dry northern weather. While I was better when in Vancouver for several weeks, a month ago, I was still always buying water bottles when I was out and about. I have a humidifier (new) going in my bedroom all night and the humity monitor only gets up to normal comfort zone. Like Mary, I do drink a lot of water, but still have dry mouth. However, I am on some medications that dry my mouth. Do you take any prescribed med or antihistamines?

Laura, have you ever heard of Sjogrens Syndrone. Dry mouth is one of the symptoms. It is a chronic disease that attacks the glands. A few years ago, my father was diagnosed with this disease after he had major eye problems. He developed ulcers in his eyes due to the dryness and almost lost his sight in both eyes (that was a story in itself). And he had constant dry mouth and dry skin, etc.

Apparently it is rare for men to develop Sjogrens, most cases are found in women. It is not something that doctor's may know about or diagnose. Here are some links that explain about it. Although everything I have read says that Sjogrens is not hereditary...I usually keep reading up about it and always think about it whenever I hear about a dry mouth.

I do not suffer from dry mouth, at times I do have itchy eyes. I thought that your post was very informative. Thanks.

These really are good sites, Judy, particularly the last one.

However, not everyone with dry mouth has Sjogrens. My mother had Sjogrens, but seemingly only for a few years, as I don't recall her suffering in the last decade of her life. Her dry mouth was REALLY DRY. She had a great deal of difficulty swollowing and sometimes in an attempt to wet her mouth with saliva, something we are unaware we all do all the time, her uvula (little tag at the back of the mouth) would stick in her throat and she would choke. She had a prescription for artificial saliva and artificial tears and she always had hard candies to suck on. She also had many other rhematoid symptoms. I, like Judy, occasionally worry about it but when I recall how severe my mother was and the fact I can get relief from drinking water, I realize I don't have it. But there are moments!
One day when shopping with my, then teen, daughter I said I had to sit down and get a drink of something. As only teens would think to say, she said "careful Mom or you'll have to keep your spit in the frig like grandma." :dave: I think of that often and it gives me the giggles while I get a drink of water and put yet more gentle tears eyes drops in.

I realize that not everyone with dry mouth will have Sjogrens...but I had never even heard about it until my father was diagnosed with it. After that I found out that a woman that I worked with had it. She kept having health problems and kept going to different doctors to find out what was wrong. She said that it was only when she went to an arthritis specialist that he finally diagnosed it. It is not something that a lot of doctors even know about...when I mentioned it to my family doctor, she had never heard about it. I just posted to give information on other possibilities for dry mouth....

Hey Judee
I only responded in case people with dry mouth worry that they may have Sjogrens. Some of us worry a lot! I do wonder about that 'spit in the frig'. and if it would help those who do suffer from extra dry mouth. In fact the concept was pretty gros to my children. My response was "how awful to go have to go through that"
At one point in my life artificial tears products were relatively rare (except those for people with allergies) and now there are more and more brands on the market. Anybody else out there know about 'spit in a bottle'?

I have heard of Sjogrens and I am NOT going to have that!!! Not going there, no way, no how! One disease is enough thank you very much! I was trying to search on google for the one medication I am on leuflonamide, but can't find squat, so I will check the pharmaceutical book next time I am at work. I had kind of wondered about the medication, and have only been on it almost 2 months now, so that may be it. As far as 'spit in a bottle' well that sounds almost disgusting!!!! I have found that sucking on Werther's works great, but I can see that's not the healthiest thing in the world either, though they sure are tastey.
