Every once in a while, the life experience we've gained can help someone else.

Today I was eating lunch in my car in the parking lot (it's quiet out there)

A young woman, looking concerned, tapped on my window. She'd locked herself out of her car, and it was running with her two month old baby inside. She was starting to cry. Now, the baby was crying too, but the heat was on in the car. The baby was all right, the Mom had just started to panic. And I had nothing in my car for tools. I could think of several things to resolve this, but each was going to cause a severe dent in the budget of a young woman driving an older car.

I sent her into the department store to ask for some help, and looked once more at what I had on hand. Her window was open a couple inches, but an arm would have to be freakishly long and thin to go far enough to move the lock.

I wedged a ballpoint pen in the hole in the end of the handle of my ice scraper. I put it through the window, angled it as best as I could under what I could see of the lock mechanism, and turned the handle. Success!

I felt like the old character on Saturday Night Live, "Middle-Aged Man," who would step in with solutions or explanations that the younger couple just couldn't fathom. The I realized that I am middle-aged.

Carol, what a nice thing for you to do, so many people would have just shrugged and walked away. And how innovative you are!!

Middle Aged Man, ha ha! I was thinking of MacGuiver. Remember that show? He fashioned something useful out of almost nothing, on a weekly basis. Good news, Carol!

It made me think of Inspector Gadget. :bluewink: Go Gadget go! Remember how he has a tool for everything?
Doesn't it make you feel great to help out someone who was probably too panicky to think straight? Good for you.

Sound like to me just a good women with a lot of common sense. Go Carol. Are you a Mom? That would explain everything if you are, if not you have wonderful common sense. This reminds me of that movie 9-5 with Lilly Tomlin. She was the brains of that outfit.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

No, I'm not a Mom, but I have a great one.

Actually, when I popped the lock and tried the handle, I did a happy dance and said an enthusiastic "yes!" (I guess I've grown older, but haven't grown up, yet) Two teenagers walked by and asked, "You're all set, then?" I told them, well, wasn't my car, but the young woman inside the store crying would be happy when she came out.

Awww... You are so sweet! And innovative, too! What a lovely, heart-warming story.

As a mom with young ones, it means so much when a "stranger" shows compassion, let alone actively helps! Believe me, you made this woman's day.

Dear Carol in ME
Have you heard the Onstar commercials that open doors when you've locked the keys inside? I think we ought to make one for you.
