So I am making my nursery set... a bumper pad and dust ruffle. The pieces are pretty standard rectangles. So I thought instead of laying out the pattern pieces i could just measure and cut. So I straightened the grain on the end by pulling a thread and cutting along the thread then I measure 13" and went to pull another thread. While cutting I thought you better double check well... half way through the fabric i realized that the size is increasing that where I stopped was 13.5" instead of 13". Did I do something wrong is it possible that the warp and weft are off? I really dont want to lay out the pieces to cut. We dont have room to do so really and being 8mths pregnant it kills me to cut things out because our table is to low and just being on my feet leaning over hurts my back. My mom was like you can cut it out on the floor and I told her that someone would have to film that because that would be the funniest or most pitiful thing ever. Any ideas on how to get it straight? I guess i could try ripping but I would hate to waste fabric. |

I see that as a bad weave. I have returned fabric in that condition, and received store credit. The store manager didn't appreciate it, when but I pointed out that I couldn't make a garment out of the cut that she sold me, she really couldn't do anything but take it back.

If I was making a piece of clothing and it needed to hang nicely I would probably return the fabric, you don't want you pant leg twisting around your leg! But I have made lots of things where it wasn't particularly important and they turned out just fine (ie quilt squares, kids clothes). Usually the lengthwise grain is ok, it is just the crosswise going wacky. As long as I prewashed and dried the fabric it was alright but do follow the lenthwise grain along the selvage. One time I made a skirt and forced the fabric to square up (as directed by my sewing teacher), it looked great until the first time I washed it - twisted back to the shape it wanted and I had a lopsided skirt unless I spent half and hour ironing it back. Congratulations on your pregnancy! I have used my rotary mat and cutter and cut things out to size, not using the pattern. In something like a dust ruffle (which has a lot of excess and hangs) and a bumper (which has a lot of topstitching) grain probably isn't too much of an issue. However, a 1/2" in only 13" seems extreme to me. Can you have a friend cut the pieces out for you? Surely someone would be happy to do that for their pregnant friend. Good luck! see the mundane life of a housewife.
