I have a new Kenmore machine with an automatic buttonhole foot. I'm just making practice runs at this point. I tried making a buttonhole with a large dress button and the foot completed the buttonhole except for the bottom portion of the buttonhole (both sides and the top were finished but not the bottom). I tried a 5/8 inch button and I'm having a really hard time. The 5/8 inch buttonhole is running down one side and then jamming up when it turns to make the bartack. I am pulling the buttonhole lever that's behind the needle down. Any help would be great.

It sounds like either the spring in your foot is not working properly or the switch controlled by the lever you pull down is not set properly. Make sure you don't move the fabric or foot after you lower the presser foot. If it continues you should probably get it to the shop.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom

Did you try the buttonhole out on a scrap of fabric?
If you get the same problem on that flat piece of fabric then you indeed have to do what Tom says, otherwise there is something in you handling what is not correct.
With kind regards,
François

I definitely have been trying the buttonhole on scrap fabric. I've tried different types of fabric and have tried to adjust the stitch width and length as well as the thread tension. Thanks so much for the help and comments.

I just spoke with Kenmore and they told me that after each buttonhole attempt, you must reset the automatic buttonhole selection or the the machine will stitch in place. Problem solved!

Sorry, I haven't been around for a few days.. If I had , I would have said "been there, done that"... I pulled my hair out till I learned that on my new machine, I had to push the button once for first buttonhole, then 2 times for each one after that in the same group, that is... (once for buttonhole, once for stitch) That is one thing I did NOT find in my manual... I do not think they explain it well at all.. I'm glad you are OK now..
