I have a Viking Huskylock 1003 LCD serger and a Bernina 1080 sewing machine. I have more problems trying to rethread from cover stitch to overlock and back. I am seriously considering just setting it to cover stitch and just overlocking with my Bernina 1080. Has anyone tried this? I need to know what stitch and foot to use, as well as any other tips. I'm just getting back into sewing since my youngest is now 4 1/2 and I don't have to be on Red Alert 24/7. The viking dealer won't let me attend the free owner classes for lessons because I didn't buy my machine at her store, or I'd be there yesterday getting a refresher course. Any advice is much appreciated! I'm really impressed with the advice here! - Lilli

I haven't done it. The people that I know who have are satisfied with the overlock stitch and foot. However, those people have never had a serger and I don't know if they would be as pleased if they had used a "real serger".

The foot I "think" you need is called a cut and sew foot #90 and attachment #80. They are initially purchased as one foot then the attachement can be purchased as a seperate item (probably because it dulls from useage.) I believe that the attachment is just a knife and guard.

I wouldn't purchase this foot unless you have seen a demo because I'm not sure you'll be as pleased as the finished seam with the serger. Plus, the serger offers you extra stitches that cannot be offered with this arrangement. You might also want to see what your dealer can find in a used simple serger for you to use. You might just find one in your price range that would work well. I've seen some very good prices on used coverstitch only machines, you might consider a dedicated machine for that if the foot isn't quite what you want. If I were you, I think I would weigh all my options.
