Hi everyone, I have a zip-up top which has embroidery that's just a zigzag stitch moved around to form flowers. Has anyone tried this on a normal sewing machine? I don't have the cash for an embroidery machine, but if that can work, I can at least join in a wee bit! Katie |

Yes I have..I did an entire cloth shower curtain that had leaves and stems all over it ( large ones LOL ) I outlined all the leaves and stems and changed the width on stem and leaves or lengthened the stitch for a different look and it worked pretty good..I did not have an embroidery machine at the time...this was years ago..but it can work...use nice colors and stitch slowly so you have a lot of control ...stop when you have to make sharp turns and turn with the needle still down into the material so you keep a nice clean line...it can look nice...if you do this...I guarantee you will get yourself an embroidery machine...LOL..let us know how it works..... Ria Oh PS> .. don't use embroidery thread...use your regular thread in nice bright colors...try it out on a swatch first to be sure you like it....I found that embroidery thread on a regular machine was not thick enough...I liked the ordinary sewing thread for this..... A lot of people do it. I haven't because I'm not all that original. Some people try it with the feed dogs down so that they can pivot and turn easily, others just move with the feed dogs up so that the stitching is more even and you have more control. Let us know how it goes!!!

Katie it isn't really that difficult. It would be much better if you had a dealer or someone show you but with very little practice almost anyone can do it once they know the tricks. In class when I teach this we actually pin a picture to the fabric and then tear the paper away afterwards... this is for practice. For the real thing you will want to Stencil or trace the design onto the fabric. The hardest thing people tend to have trouble with is that the machine should be running wide open while you move the fabric at the speed to give the coverage you desire. The faster the needle is moving the more control you have. You might want to start just writing your name using zig -zag. The bad (or good for some people) thing is that it follows your handwriting. If you have illigable handwriting like I do it is much harder. After just a few tries you should have something that looks just like your signature. The embroidery machine is easier but I have a few customers that like to do this anyway. I guess its like the people that insist on quilting by hand. Have fun or don't do it, Tom

Hey thanks everyone! I'll have a good practice before I attempt anything wearable. This site is so great for interesting things... Katie |
