I'm struggling sewing "koozies" (neoprene can holders) back together (I've monogrammed them)- They are not wanting to feed through my sewing machine and are only knotting up the thread when I start sewing...any suggestions? I need to get the hem as close to the outside as possible, so that I don't lose the size of the koozie. Any help would be so appreciated! |

Hi Alisha and welcome to Sew Whats New. I have never sewn with neoprene but Sandra Betzina says this. Use a roller foot, it helps the fabric feed into the machine much easier. Use nylon thread and a 75/11 stretch needle. Tiny zigzag stitches. Hope this helps.

You have to use a medium weight cotton or cotton /poly thread both top and bottom with it, medium to hard pressure on your presser foot and a zig-zag stitch, around 6-8 stitches per inch. Use a size 14 or 16 needle. Make sure you use a piece of scrap (rubbery side up) to start with and follow it with the project, rubbery side up. As your project is flowing under the presser foot keep good tension on the scrap to help the project move under the foot without problems. You will need a bit looser tension on both your upper and bobbin tension settings. Turn 1/4 turns and make sure you write down how many turns you did so you can turn it back that many when you are done. Just take it SLOW, neoprene can very easy to sew once you get the feel of how IT wants to work. |

I make hats with some neoprene in them. I have an old machine that only does straight stitch so I put some newspaper or magazine under the part I'm sewing then just tear away when done. Works great! |
