How do you decide what length to cut elastic for a waistband?

When I sew for my dd I just put it around her waist and adjust to fit. But when you don't have the person here with you that you are sewing for, how do you know how long to make it? Say that their waist is 22 inches?

Depending on the stretch of the elastic I tend to take 1-2 inches off the waist measurement. Depends too on how the person likes the elastic to fit. My dd likes hers loose so I add an inch or two so she can roll the waistbands like she likes to do but my grandson wants his to fit so I usually take an inch or two off. Hope that helps some. I'm sure someone else will be along soon with their ideas too.

Will this work: Pretend it is for you....put the elastic around your waist and make it comfortable...then measure your waist...figure the difference (if any) that way and then make your adjustments for the 22 inch waist. Say yours is 20 and 19 inches feels comfy...then I would make the one for the 22 inch waist 21 inches... I hope you understand that! LOL

I do what Lyn does, usually take off 1-2 inches depending on how stretchy the elastic is and whether or not the person is going to want it to fit tight or looser

Thanks! I was thinking I'd just take and inch or two off, didn't know if there was some magical formula or *right* way to do it :)

Thanks again!

Most patterns will say natural measurment plus one inch. That allows for you to sew the elastic together. However, if the elastic is stretchy, sometimes you stretch the elastic when you plut it in. I agree that if the elastic is very stretchy, I'd take off 1-2 inches.
