I have a Deco 650 which uses Brother cards and the Ultimate Box works well for me. No additional software was needed. Mine has a serial port connection but the new ones have USB. Having the serial connection was good for me because I had used all my USB connections. It makes no difference in the use of the UB. Having two cards would be a big help and I will be ordering another one soon. It is very easy to use. Make sure it will work with your particular machine because even though it works with the 650, it will not work with the new Bernina 330. However, Vikant said they were working on that.

I also have the ultimate box and I downloaded the trial version of Embird to use for converting designs to .pes format when I download ones that are in a different format. I could use the box alone, but I have no way of seeing exactly what I am putting onto the box without Embird. It's a great tool, don't know what I did without either one of them! I'm now learning how to change patterns, redesign them and would like to get more add ons for the Embird program.
