My best friend in the whole wide world is expecting her second daughter. I would really like to make something for the new baby and for big sis too. The problem is that they live in another state and I'd like it to be a surprise so I won't have any measurements.

The baby is due in May so I thought I could just make a 3-6 mo. (13-16 lb) size and figure that it will fit her at some point durring the summer.

I'm a little stumped at a size for the older girl. She just turned 2. They live in a warm state so I wanted to make her a summer dress and a hat (she loves hats  ). I would consider her "average" size for a 2 y/o, not particularly chunky or skinny. She may be a little on the shorter side, but I figured that wouldn't matter too much with a dress.

Any suggestions on how to determine what size I should make?

Hi Lynnie. The 2 yr. old girl probably takes a 1 in pattern sizes. Whatever you make will only fit her for one season. Maybe a little wraparound sundress and hat. I'm sure the other girls here will have loads of suggestions.

I've done this and it worked out: I got one of those cheapy patterns on the rack (not in the pattern drawers) for a wrap around dress with bloomers for the infant. From the front it looks like either a sundress or a jumper. And for the big sister, I got another cheapy pattern for a jumper. I agree, size 1 should be fine. I found both the jumper and sundress to be so fast to make--You might even like to make them again in a 12 mos size and a Toddler-2. I made this pair of dresses in the fall, and I gave them along with long sleeved shirts to wear underneath. Last week I saw a photo of both girls in their dresses, with their long sleeves. The mom felt that, with winter coming to an end soon, and with the loose style of the wrap around baby dress, both girls would be able to wear their dresses in summer without a shirt underneath. Hurray for cotton! Good luck!

Some of the patterns I've been looking at for my GS are very vague as to their sizing, mostly the Kwik Sew Patterns. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what size I should be cutting for my GS. Several of the patterns I have looked at don't even list some of the measurements I have for him (ever try to measure a moving object!? :bang: ). Would the same sizing method apply as Andrea explained? Anyway, if anyone can give me some guidance on how best to approximate for a toddler boy, I'd be very grateful.

Burda Patterns for kids, have a chart in the pattern tissue that has expected sizes for kids from ages 1 month to 9 or 10 years of age. Of course, this is an average size so you have to kind of adjust it for taller, shorter, chubbier kids. But I am finding so far it's been great. I actually typed it out so if anyone wants a copy, email me or pm me and I'll send a copy to you by email.

Ok everyone, I am getting cramped fingers from all the requests for the chart. So, here's a link to the chart which I have posted on photobucket.
burda child chart (http://photobucket.com/albums/v425/LauraBC/?action=view&current=childchart.jpg)

Once you get to the chart, you can right click on it and save it to your computer somewhere. It's printed sideways, so if you leave it on your computer you will have to rotate it. If this doesn't work for you, let me know please!!

Thanks for the sizing chart Laura! I was peeking around your pictures-you do great work. wondering about the diaper covers. Did you have a pattern for them? They are very cute and while you don't need them for disposables they would be cute anyway. Me, I never used disposable diapers but I know everyone does these days.

you could always make the simple pillocase dress very adjustable my daughter just loves hers. I made one for my niece at 2 and she is five now and can still wear it. They also look great for beach pics and the all white photos every mom wants.

Hi everyone. Some of you mentioned sundresses for little girls. I make about 90% of my 18 m.o. granddaughters clothes..by the way, she is still in a 12 month size...my little Princess Peanut. Anyway, I have gotten quite a few patterns from a web site called www.SewBaby.com They have adorable dresses, and other things, that work up fast and the directions are super easy to follow. Just thought I would mention it. Have a great night all!!!
If I had known that grandchildren were so much fun, I would have had them first!!

OH Wow==this chart is wonderful =thank you! I have more problems not so much with Sarah's length but with her shoulders (they are small) and her waist is smaller than most of the patterns use!! This will be a great resource for me as well! thank you!

For little boys :bolt: - I have 2 that are always in motion. I tend to take their fav clothes (that fit anyway) and use them as a basic measurement rather than trying to get them to hold still. Or I do a little at a time - okay stand like a "T" (measure measure, run away....do again in a few hours.....that type or thing.I have also been known to have another person help - one time my mom held out stickers just out of reach so I could measure their necks. :dave: The clothes thing seems to work the best though.

Also, thank you for posting that pattern chart - my peanut is 4 but is the size of a 2year old so I'm always having sizing issues.

Does antone have a chart for childrens elastic. I make a lot of clothes for gifts & it is so hard to guess how much elastic especially for newborns. All my patterns tell me to measure. Hard to do when Baby isn't born yet. I would like some standards to go by.

Barb, I've struggled with this too. I don't have a chart, so here's what I do instead: I rummage in the basement for the bags of diapers that we never finished as my daughter grew out of them. I can get a good waist and leg measurement from that! This morning I gave in and called a friend and ruined the surprise, b/c her baby is a year old now, and I couldn't make a good guess anymore. The baby's leg at the diaper edge was about 11 inches around. I cut 11 inches, and then overlapped the ends a good inch to make it just a little bit snug, without making her cranky. ...hmm...Maybe I should gather up all those different diapers and make a little chart!
