Hi. My friend will be a bridesmatron in 2 weeks. The bride isn't too picky--she gave the girls an array of black dresses and told them each to go shopping and pick out the one they liked best for themselves. Well, my friend picked up her dress today. It's a halter neck, with a V-neck that plunges too deeply for her comfort. At the last fitting, she said that the cleavage area was "gaping," and not lying flat against her chest. They worked on it a bit in the alterations department, and she says it's better now, but still not making her feel comfy--dreading a slow dance with a groomsman! Anyway, I told her to bring it by and I'd see what we can do. Do you think I could hand-sew in some trim, just insert a gather of organza or lace to give her a little modesty? It's a lined dress with a black organza overlay. Could it be that simple? Andrea

I read this someplace else... What if you attached a piece of seam tape or elastic at the center front of the v-front, where it falls away from her sternum. Wrap the ends around in back of her, then keep wrapping around to meet and tie in front. I don't think it has to tie in front, just easier for the wearer to tie it that way. You can add to the front, but this is easier. |

At first I thought you meant this would go under the garment, but now I'm not so sure... Do you mean to wrap it around, criss-cross and then tie under the bust, and _then_ zip up the garment?

Ah, Carol, I just saw what you meant--Yes, it looks like my friend isn't the only one struggling to make it through bridesmaids season! It's just amazing to me when these girls are going to the bridal shops and having the dresses made and going in for fittings and all. Andrea

When I was doing custom sewing I did bridal almost continually. I think the organza would look really well, since there is organza already. I often had this problem with bridesmail dresses and I think adding the organza is the simplest way to fix it. MariLynntex |

Yes, I did mean under the dress. Just to tighten it right up to her chest. I probably read it on the tip portion of Pattern Review, if you want to search over there. |

in Sewing 911, barbara deckert recommends a "boning finger", and tuck this under her bra to hold the v-neck in, take a 2 inch piece of boning with casing (I make my casings from seambinding tape or satin ribbon, feels better on bare skin than pre-cased boning), stitch it to the lining at the bottom of the V and tuck it into the front of her bra to hold the dress to her body. all great ideas. thanks well, my friend came by and put on her dress. It wasn't gaping after all. It fit quite correctly. It was simply a less modest style than she cared for. From where her eyes are, she could (almost) peek down her own dress and see her bra! I assured her that nobody else could see that, and if they got so close that they could, then she may slap them! I showed her a tuck of gathered organza, and she thought about it, and then she decided to just go ahead and trust the whole rest of the world who said she looked just fine.
