Knowing how music affects our everyday lives what's your lastest trend to listen to?

Lately I have been listening to Sugarland ( funny since I'm not really into country music), Madonna, Michael Buble, and Natasha Beddingfiled. I love the Soundtrack from Brokeback Mountain and Cold Mountain.

Have been listening to Benny Goodman with Gene Krupa on drums, Dave Brubeck, and some CD's recently taken from tapes of my Dad playing the sax in a dance band he started when he was retired.......the tapes were beginning to disintegrate so our son put them on CD's for my mother and for us. What memories!
And in May we will be going to see (and hear) Dave Brubeck in concert at Ann Arbor, MI.....can't wait for that!

I do find that I am getting into some Big Band area stuff. My parents where ALWAYS playing it in the house when I was growing up. Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman are my favorites.
My dad was also in a local dance band Sharon!!!! He played dance music with the Goodyear Heights (named after the Tire Company that is at the end of the neighborhood) Dance Band. He played the clarinet (which my DD played all through school). DD & SIL are looking to buy a house one block over from where her Grandparents first lived after their marriage!!!!

I love the good country, not the old twangy stuff. Also like the golden oldies of the 50's & 60's. Dh & I turned 13 in the 50's so brings back memories of starting to grow up. Every Friday night the school we attended had a sock hop in the gym. It was packed every Friday night. Teachers & chaperones were so much fun too.

I just want to rock n roll all night, and dance the night away! (yeah I know its not the right line to the song, but I'm getting too old to party - besides I have to work in the morning!)

I'm waiting for the nursing home, when we will rock n roll to the Stones, I can't get no Satisfaction. Ruby Tuesday and the like!

As long as I can dance to it, I'll listen to just about any kind of music (except RAP - that won't happen - I just don't understand it).
But, :bang: is fun. I love Nickelbacks, "Animal" song!

I listen to almost anything. A co-worker got me interested in Flaw, I love Michael Buble, then of course Nora Jones, Nickelback, Simple Plan, the occasional Green Day song. I also listen to a lot of Christian music, Tait, Jars of Clay, Mercy Me (my daughter danced to one of their songs), then of course I love Enya and Enigma too. I also have my fair share of classical, mostly Mozart and Beethoven, I have the Nutcracker soundtrack as well, and would love to get my hands on Vivaldi: The Four Seasons again. And this time of year, I pull out my Irish Drinking Songs. Right now I am listening to a lot of 'country' type music. I am going to see a friend play tomorrow night actually. He is really good, and though I'm not a big listener of country, I really like his stuff. My daughter is actually doing a tap to one of his songs this year. You can hear it if you want, just go to http://www.geocities.com/redd_country I can't wait until he makes it big, he's so good.

I still like the old pop tunes. I listen to an AM radio station that has songs from the 50's - 80's. soft rock & pop. If I listen to tapes or cd's my favorites are Bobby Vinton, Neil Diamond, Mac Davis, Or anything from Roger's & Hammerstien Musicals.
I haven't found much in the newer music I like unless it has been a remake.
i have gotten my kids into listening to the oldies also.

Don't know how many of you like Eric Clapton but he was on a PBS special last night.....singing the old time blues of Robert Johnson.....it was wonderful!
Some of it done acoustically. Our kids are astounded that we like him.......they tell us that when they were kids and listened to him we used to ask them if that was called 'music' and could they hum that tune for us! Of course at that time we were older than we are now.........second childhood I think they call this......LOLOL

I had a CD on one day when a young repairman came to the house. He kept asking me if it Eric Clapton was a CD and had I put it on myself
I listen all sorts of music, preferring classical music. My CD player holds 5 CD's which pretty well takes me through a day and I oten put a mix on - folk, opera, ballet music, marching bands, 60's rock (not wild about 50's as I was a teenager the entire 50's and got a little tired of it, but sometimes bop around to it), I hear too much 70's disco at Curves to hear it at home - I even listen to new age stuff, depending on what moves me. But I usually have the radio on to our CBC. I do like the talk shows, especially in the morning and they are not rabid or loud phone in's on CBC, but more varied information. When my children were babies CBC was my link to sanity through some sort of intellectual input! I really mourned the passing of Peter Gzowski. I don't really like the change CBC has taken, but appreciate the need to attract younger listeners. I'm and my ilk are not going to be around forever. I used to even have the radio on in my office when working, but have surprised myself lately by realizing mid afternoon I had not turned radio on. At that point I usually turn the TV on, but don't really watch it.
I don't get angry at much but I am damn mad that the radio in my car can get everything crystal clear except CBC - haven't had time to check out the warrenty.

Wow I miss a lot when I come in just once a day. Great subject Naomi.

At the moment I'm stuck on country. I can't get any other radio station here except country. All my cd's are in storage in my cd player we saved but the reciever didn't make it out the water. It was on the bottom shelf of the cabinet. I have quite a collection of oldies 50,60,70,some 80's and some 90's. I buy the 2000's off the walmart website and burn them myself.

Yesterday they had a pic of them getting Fat's Domino's white piano out his house in the lower 9th ward of New Orleans. It's really sad he lost 3 of his pianos. Fat's was a frequent visitor to our WalMart store in Chalmette and he was very friendly. My son was suppose to take him on his boat fishing before the storm and they never was able to get together when both were able to go. Very nice down to earth man.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Susie,I still like to listen to Fat's. Blueberry Hill was one of my brothers favorite & I like it too. He was one good performer. I also wish that Charlie Pride would come back. In the 70's I never left the house without taking Charlie with me in the car. It became a family joke. That man could SING for sure. When the cassettes came out I gave my Dad all my 8 tracks & he played them for years. Haven't thought of those in a long time. Still have lots of cassettes but cd's are what I play mostly. Doesn't everyone though ? Hey, I still have my 45's & albums plus 2 stereo's to play them on.I was offered some good money for some of the 45's but they hold too many memories. Just a sentimental ole gal. Sure have some wonderful memories.

I had some 45's and 33's in a cabinet in my house and the cabinet warped up and I couldn't get them out. I was afraid to pry on it because of critters in the house, I didn't see any but there might have been some lurking so I didn't push the issue. I had lots of records. Some old ones that probably aren't on cd's either. Some of our local musicians I had their records, oh well I have to let it go. I didn't have a phonograph to play them on but I had my records.

My favorties were Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, and Bobby Vinton. Soft voice singers. I also loved the song, "The Man in my little girls life" that was sung by Mike Douglas he had a talk show in the evenings. Those were the days my friend, I wished they'd never end.

I'm not much of a music listener...TV is usually my thing. But I finally bought a CD player a couple of years ago and then started buying a few CD's but even though I have the player, I usually turn on the radio instead of putting in a CD. Whenever there is a discussion of music, I always remember my father saying that he wants to be tuned into what is on now...not listening to something that never changes. Maybe I am like him. There is a radio station in Ottawa that plays Light Rock so when I am at work, I have my ear phones plugged into my radio. The odd times that I listen to my CDs, I have....Josh Groban, Michael Bubbé, Nora Jones, Shania Twain, Clay Aiken, Diana Krall, Jan Arden, KD Lang, Kelly Clarkson, Barbara Streisand.

I just heard there is a new Fats Domino CD either just released or soon to be released. I think for Katrina relief.
Susie, I made dirty rice a couple nights ago and listened to Dr. John for dinner music (we always listen to music at dinner -- candles too). I thought of you.
I am a huge Dr. John fan.
My husband just discovered Buckwheat Zydeco -- also from your neck of the woods -- when he played at a local club. It was fantastic.
Folks down your way have great food and even greater music!!

Susie It sounds like we have the same taste in music. My all time fav song is "The Men in My Little Girls Life". I used to watch The Mike Douglas Show every chance I could. Most of the music I listen to was what My older sisters or Mom would play. I was a teenager in the 70's & don't really care for a lot of the rock from then.

I remember whe Mike Douglas was just a local TV show here in Cleveland the he moved on to I think Philly and from there I don't know where he went. It was the 1 pm show that my mom always had on in the afternoons. She would try and sing along with him, but could not sing on key to save her life!!!!! Lucky for my sister and I that we took after our dad and can sing, on key mind you, not so for our poor brother!!!!

I sing ( :nervous: ) but don't tell anyone...my husband always wants to know how I remember the words to almost any song I hear. I donno..it's like remembering numbers..I memorize credit card numbers, phone numbers...
But for the life of me, I can't remember some people's names. (it took me 5 yrs to remember my next door's neighbors name...someone was always having to tell me who she was...). And I always forget to read name tags...

So I sing in my car all the time...(thank heavens no one can hear me :dave: )

You think that's bad Kath, I sing in the car and don't know the words. :dave: The grandkids get so mad at me. They tell me, "MawMaw that's not how it goes." I say, "So"

I sing in the car too but only when I' alone. I don't even attempt it at stop lights. Did you ever see someone alone singing in their car ? It cracks me up every time. You can't hear them but sure know they are singing. It really doesn't take much to crack me up though come to think of it. Once when we had bought a different car I'd driven it a couple times but hadn't really paid much attention to some of the stuff. Was out with a friend & somehow turned the wipers on. There it was the sun shinning so bright & not a cloud in the sky & those wipers going. I found the deal to spry the windshield to clean it but that was it. The manual was in the glove box but my friend couldn' find about the wipers. I was laughing so hard. Believe me, I had the cleanest windsheild in all of Naples when I got home. I still laugh about that. So I don't just laugh at others, I laugh at myself a lot too.

The ONLY thing I find revolting that people do in their cars, is pick their noses and ears. (that goes on here a LOT...) Oh...and opening their car doors and spiting...nasty...yuck...

I think EVERYONE should sing in their cars...keeps'em off their cell phones.
People can laugh at me all they want....for all they know I might be a professional jingle singer..... (after all last week on Jeopardy they had the phone message lady on playing....you never know.... )

Singing in the car is one of my favorite things. It ranks up there with oak aged Chardonnay and fine Rayon/Linen cloth.
One of my favorite memories is when my youngest daughter was in high school and relations were still strained -- but much better than middle school. We were driving along a country road in the summer with the stereo blasting singing at the top of our lungs to a favorite of both of us -- Janis Joplin "Bye bye baby, baby bye bye."
Relations have not been strained since.

Chrys, I wasn't making fun of people that sing in their cars, I just meant it cracks me up at times. As I said ,I sing in mine too. Sorry if anyone took that comment wrong. I simply laugh a lot about lots of things, I'd rather find things funny than gripe or think it's stupid. Like about the wipers going, I could have pulled over somewhere & stopped the wipers but I wasn't that far from home & was simply laughing about how silly it was. I too think it's revolting to spit & pick your nose & such.I think cell phones are wonderful but not while driving in heavy traffic. There are too many people that can't do 2 things at once. A lot of bad accidents has happened here because of them. Same as men shaving while driving & women putting on makeup. We have even seen a man reading a novel while driving. Now that is scary.
