Have never had a problem with my Elna Carina, bought it new in the 80s. It bunched up on the bobbin thread side, and when I removed the mess, the bobbin thread would not pick up. I took apart bobbin casing, cleaned it, replaced it, oiled it, tried adjusting the screw (with numbers) nothing will get the thread to pick up, it is out of sync. I checked the needle and it is fine. help. Nearest repair place is an hour away.

The old Elnas seldom went out of time unless the lower gear broke. Is the hook turning around the bobbin case area when you rotate the hand wheel? If so, is there a bind at any point? Either is a symptom that the plastic gear down in the bottom of the arm that drives the hook, is broken.

The bobbin case seemed really loose, no tension at all so I made the drive and took it in for repair. He called today and said it was way, way out of time but the gear isn't broken and he was going to have to get the repair manual for that model. He is an authorized Elna dealer so I am hopeful he can fix it. I must have just tugged too hard when it bunched up under there, I learned my lesson the hard way. Thanks again for your reply, Bill. When I read it, I knew it was beoyond me to fix and I had to take it to a pro!

I hope he's right, but I'm apprehensive. The pinion gear that drives the hook and is about the only thing that can let them get out of time, has a pin thru the shaft, and it seems unlikely that it would get out of time if the gear isn't damaged. Not being an Elna expert by any means, I'll just keep my fingers crossed for you. (Actually, the gear replacement on these isn't really that big a deal.)

I'm with Bill. I have never seen a Carina hook out of time unless the gear was damaged unless someone had removed the hook and not timed properly when reinstalling. If your tech is having to get a service manual I suspect he doesn't have much experience with those models and will end up finding that the pinion gear is damaged. Sometimes the teeth portion of the gear slips on the base and the gear still looks to be ok. Whatever it is I'm sure he'll get to the bottom of it for you.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom
