I am attempting to make a baby jumper for a friend who is expecting. It's Simplicity 4243 if that helps. The pattern envelope calls for 3/8 yd of snap tape 5/8" wide with 3/4" spacing. Of course I forgot to look for that when I was right there in Joann's. So I was going to stop by Walmart tonight to see if they have something I can use. I was looking around on-line to get an idea of how pricey this is going to be. I'm a little concerned that I cannot seem to find exactly what I need anywhere on-line. I can find 1 1/2" spacing but nothing as small as 3/4". Any chance this is a typo and they really mean 1 1/2"? If I can only find the 1 1/2", could I get extra snaps and put them in half way between the other ones? I've never done anything this complicated yet and don't want to deviate too awfully far from the pattern. Thanks. |

As long as it's the same width, it seems the spacing of the snaps would be optional. 1 & 1/2 inch doesn't seem that far apart, especially when the kid is wiggling and you are trying to snap them up. But it's been a long time since I've snapped a baby up, so what do I know. Dorothy |

Believe me, the snap tape is a God send. Take that from someone who has messed up more grippers than I care to remember (wasted more money on them too). I'd just use the spaced tape I can find. It should run between 3.95 and 5.95 a yard. You can find nylon gripper and metal gripper snap tape. I really don't know which is technically best. They out grow the garments so fast at that age I doubt that care and longevity is a problem. You'll want snaps on both sides of the crotch, so you can just pleat the tape to get one about 1/2-3/4 an inch from the crotch seam if you need to..it may not even be a problem.

I remember when I had babies the plastic snaps in RTW didn't last as well as the metal -- but that was a long time ago and they have probably improved it since then. Dorothy |

When my mom made jumpsuits for my daughter, she used the 3/4 inch kind first. The crotch& legs must have had about 15 or so of those buggers, and it took me all day long to snap them!!! She found the ones with slightly bigger snaps that were spaced farther, and it worked out much better during diaper changes. I think I have seen snap tape on sewbaby.com but it was a while ago. worth a check.

sewbaby.com has just snaps. not on a tape, so you have to apply them yourself, but could space them as desired, and they come in all kinds of pretty colors. joann.com has snap tape on the spool (have to buy the whole spool I think but the price is great) and in a package, and that's just a couple of dollars. Thanks I like the idea of putting in pleats. I babysit enough to have a general idea where snaps should go to do the job. I'll just fold the tape and stitch it so that everything ends up in the right place. I'll probably go with the metal snaps if they have them. I've read on other sites where people have had problems with the plastic ones getting accidently melted with a iron or warped by the heat of a dryer. |

Who irons baby clothes??!!!! LOL! No, I meant if I hit them while pressing. I think the snap tape goes in before the hems are done. I found some packaged snap tape (1 1/2" spacing) at Walmart for $2.50 for 18". Not terribly expensive, but not really cheap either. I was all ready for a quite evening of sewing. I had even figured out finally how to ease in a sleeve cap when... the power went out. A transformer blew up and knocked out power for two hours. By then it was time for bed. Ah well, at least I got a good night's sleep and can start back in fresh tonight. |

I'm a "bit" anti-ironing (I press neurotically while sewing though) case in point... one day at 7am I was actually ironing a blouse for work and DH came up with a quizzical look, "I was wondering why you were sewing at 7am?" he almost fell over from shock when I told him I was ironing a blouse. My kids wear a lot of knits!! Jeanette

Nope sorry, first time mommies dont iron baby clothes!! Atleast the normal ones dont, OCD ones might!! Walmart does have the snappy tape and so does Joans I think it was a little cheaper from Joan but not to bad at walmart. The plastic ones will melt if you throw the outfit in the dryer!! ^speaks from personal experience. Stephi Stephi

This first time Mom certainly never did. Admittedly, I don't ever iron my own clothes, so.......... Ticia speaking of the little monsters, better see where they've crawled off to. |

I'm with you Ticia!!! I never ironed baby clothes either and my kids all grew up wearing knits...it's no wonder my daughter now asks me to iron the few blouses she owns (she's 24!) she never had to learn how to iron! I made a bunch of onsies and outfits for the adorable GD with snap tape, the 3/4 spacing stuff. And the sweet mommie said, argh! It takes forever to snap them up with such a wiggler for a baby. So now, I am going to get the 1 1/2" spaced tape. I have a bunch of the plastic snaps on tape, but the tape is really stiff and doesn't wash nicely, so I think I will use it up on something to get rid of it and go with the metal on cotton twill. Got mine at a fantastic price off Ebay, yards of white and black
