I would like to make my daughter one of those popular pillowcase dresses, but the only directions online I have seen are made for little girls up to around 5 years old. My daughter is 8, so I need to know how to adjust a pattern, how much fabric to buy, etc. for her size. Can anyone either give me directions or send me a link?

Probably like a bandana shirt...you get a pillow case, make holes for the head and arms, sew elastic for the waist....(bandana shirt...2 bandanas, hole for the head and arms, seam the sides and shoulders...making sure the RIGHT side of the bandana is OUT.) I wore them as a kid...simple, cheap and they go with everything these days....

Most of the ones I've seen are made like sun dresses with sheering across the top and straps or ties at the shoulders. I think some may cut a little on the side to accomidate the arms.

those are the directions I used the first time I made one. I've change how I do it now, I put elastic in the casing at the neck and use binding at the arms holes leaving them longer for the ties at the shoulders. I didn't feel safe having a drawstring type effect at the neck for my toddler.

They may be the directions you are already using as it only goes up to a size 4 or 5 I think, but I would guess that you could just measure how long you want the dress to be and buy fabric accordingly? You may not be able to use an actual pillowcase depending on how tall your lo is.

They also look cute as tops with a pair of capris underneath!

Sorry if that wasn't the help you were looking for!

I got a pattern for the pillowcase dress going up to size 14 on eBay. If you just put pillowcase dress in the search you will get it. I don't recall the name of the seller but it is the original pillow case dress.
I know that I sometimes sound like a walking advertisement for eBay but I have had so much luck getting sewing and quilting things on there...including fabric...that I just want to pass it on. They also have the best prices around for rotary cutting blades.
If I had known that grandchildren were so much fun, I would have had them first!!

I have made Sarah several pillowcase dresses and bought a great pattern off of Ebay (downloadable.) It's SOOOOO easy and they are cute as buttons.
I agree that they look cute with capris!
Sarah is a toddler and much I read said not to use them w/toddlers b/c they could get the ribbons caught around their necks and strangle themselves? Anyone heard this ??? I still made them and she never bothered the ribbons but I kept an eye on her.
Both that I made for her I made out of gingham and used coordinating ribbon. They looked adorable on her.
I don't know how you guys do your arm holes but I measure the arms in a modified triangle shape and sew. You basically measure across and down and then turn under. There is elastic around the neck and you tie the bows on each shoulder in between the 2 pieces of fabric. I am not good at explaining things so that may not make sense.
I measured the length based on how long I wanted it to be and guessed a bit with the width and had to modify a little. Sarah is smaller through her torso but taller.

Mariellen, don't feel bad about being an Ebay shopper. Both DH and I are pretty regular on Ebay. I find it really good, I have been very happy so far with all my purchases. DH has had one unfortunate experience, a bit of male ego's butting heads!!
