Is there anything special I should know before embroidering a cardigan sweater? It is not thick. Very smooth and tight weave. No cable stitch etc. just very smooth and not thick. Dressy but plain. Does it need a topper? What would be the best stabilizer for under it? thanks much for any help as this is my first time doing a knit fabric. :) Ria
I am assuming I should use a ball point tip needle.

Make sure the knit is STUCK to the stabilizer. Use a sticky or some spray. DO NOT HOOP. Float some mesh underneath and a solvy on top. (the heavier the better.) Stabilizer depends on the design...the heavier the design the more stabilizer you'll need, but it needs to be soft. You don't want a big wad under the sweater.

If it were me I'd use two layers of Poly Mesh hooped very tightly, 505 spray, and light weight solvy on top like Aquafilm. I wouldn't float any stabilizer. I would baste or pin baste the sweater to the hoop (along with the 505 it should be secure). This will guard against the weight of the sweater pulling it away from the hoop. If the sweater is not tight fitting, I would just be careful NOT to stretch it as I layed it on the tightly hooped stabilizer. The Poly Mesh cut away is a very strong but soft stabilizer. When I finished, I would grade the stabilizer.

When you place the sweater on the hoop, if it is not straight, do not shift the sweater, lift the whole thing and replace the sweater so as not to get it off-grain or stretch it.

Paroper and Chrysantha these are great tips...I have a good idea how to do it now..I will do my sewing today and let you guys know how it turns out. I did pick out a whispy flowery design that was not too heavy..everything you both said makes sense to me. I had a feeling about the topping so thats great I am right about that. I see there are options on the bottom stabilizer. I do think I will make sure it is very straight and where I want it and I will baste it. thanks so very much......:) Ria

It turned out absolutely beautiful and I didnt even use any sticky stuff..no spray or self stick stabilizer, I hate that stuff...I very tightly hooped my under stabilizer and pinned the sweater carefully to that right inside the edges of the hoop and used the topper and stitched...it is gorgeous...thanks ladies...:) Ria

I'm new to all of this so it might sound like a dumb question but what is the topper?
I would love to see a picture of the finished sweater also

Topper is usually a light weight water soluble stabilizer. It does nothing more than to hold down stray nap (like toweling or ribbing). It serves as a temporarly bridge to hold the stitches out of the fabric until the stitching is complete. When the solvy is dissolved later the stitches will still ride above the nap of the fabric. Stabilizer like Solvy, Aqua film are used as toppers. There are some stabilizer that dissolve with heat. Some people use tuille the color of the garment or project or some other light weight clear fabric. Tuille works better than solvy if the design is not very dense and the density of the nap is very thick.

Many people use a solvy on top of most of their embroidery. It doesn't hurt but is unnecessary if there is nothing to pop out...like I use it on towels but I don't it on sweat shirts or t-shirts. I would never use it on a cotton project that was smooth on top. I usually use it on fleece. I just hate to use stabilizers that don't help the project. I just think they are too expensive to waste.

Well doesn't this take the cake...My daughter came over and I asked her to please bring her camera...she forgot it..and get this...she walked off with my sweater...LOL...but I'm not laughing...Heh heh..she is sweet so I let her "borrow" it.....I purchased it from Fields and it is a silk blend and she couldn't believe that I would even try to stitch it....it is that new lime green color that is so popular and I stitched a whispy flowery design that was in pale and lime greens and med greens..several pinks and yellow for flowers...it really is pretty....:) Ria

It sounds perfectly lovely Ria, and I love that green color, it is almost my favorite color. I think I would have tried to walk out with your sweater as well :dave:
