Well, since I turned 41 yesterday I told my dh that it's too risky for me to have another child now (my MD said so too). He's not too happy about it but remembers how sick I was while pregnant with our daughter- if there was a problem to have, I had it. I have spent a bloody fortune in maternity clothes though. I kept them thinking we were going to have another child before I turned 40 but it never happened. These were some of favorite things and I'd like to alter them to being non-maternity clothes. Am I crazy to want to do this? Do people do this kind of thing? - Maureen.

I searched old posts and see it may not be possible. I'll try a shirt or two and see what happens. It may work with simple shirts. I'm curious enough to try though. It's definitely time to up-date my closet but with us moving in 2-3 months I'd hate to spend $$ for cold weather clothes that I'll never wear in FL. It's already getting hot down there. - Maureen.

I unloaded a lot of my maternity stuff b/n ebay and consignment stores, just a thought, I've altered patterns to create maternity stuff but never the other way around, good luck!!

Hi. I laughed when I read your post, but not because your question is silly--which it is not. I am laughing because as soon as you alter all your fabulous maternity clothes, you had better be CAREFUL! We had problems getting pregnant the first time, (10 years of trying) and after that a couple of "experts" told be I could NEVER get pregnant again. HA! I now have a really cute 5 1/2 year old who I had at 41. (14 months after they told me) Not a great pregnancy, either. The thing is, after those smarties told me I was unable to conceive, I gave everything away, I mean really away. I didn't save so much as a bib for a guest's baby. So if you want a good luck fertility charm, then by all means, alter those clothes! BTW, I sewed many outfits for that pregnancy and all of the fullness in my patterns was limited to the belly, height and width. So, you would need to take in the front side seams and even up the hem. Don't forget to get rid of those telltale back waist ties--dead giveaway to Maternity--at least around here. You have nothing to lose by trying! I'd pin side seams first to see how you feel about the fit. It's not like maternity clothes now are like in the past....all that gathered fullness right above the bulge and all. Now they look like regular clothing but maybe in knits or other fabrics that will give. I'd certainly work with at least two of your outfits just to see what will happen...you may be quite happy! |

Taking the ties off shouldn't be that hard - I'll just pop the seams, pull 'em out & sew it back up. I'm not going to alter anything that has alot of gathers/tucks - that'd be asking for a headache. If (and that's a big "if") I get pregnant after altering some clothes, I will have a loooong talk with God when I eventually get to the pearly gates about His sense of humor. I already have a strong-willed, independent and way-too-smart 3 year old dd. I see too much of myself in her and that makes me very afraid. I don't know how my mother let me live past 14. Knowing my luck, God would give me a strong-willed independent and way-too-smart little boy. I'll be the woman standing in the social security line changing her son and popping Valium at the same time. May God help anyone who "tsks" in my direction! - Maureen.

I'm sure that Abraham was proud of himself but I bet that Sarah wasn't that thrilled about being pregnant at her age! I always felt a kinship with her. The big thing about maternity clothes is the extra length built into the front. If you can figure out a way to remove that, you'd probably be fine. I have a jumper that I still wear because it was just sort of a float thing...very comfortable. Even pants and skirts could probably be altered but you'll probably have to do something to get rid of not only the width but the height of the waist. pam

I had to laugh too - 8 months ago I gave away all my maternity clothes, I have 5 and 2 year old girls, and was determined no more kids. Well, hubby suggests that maybe we should reconsider that and gee, I'm now almost 6 months pregnant. It seemed so hard to conceive the first two that I was a little surprised this time, especially since I'm 38 and thought it should be getting harder not easier! So be warned! Anyway, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to alter some of those tops, I'm not sure about the pants though. If they don't have pannels in front then they should be ok. Jen |

Hmmm...had to chuckle. I've given away most of my baby stuff, except my crib. I still have some maternity clothes too, that I could use. However, my DS will be 5 in 3 weeks, and I will soon be 44. However, my OB/GYN told me to be extremely careful as this is the time that I could very easily get pregnant as I am entering "perimenopause" (sp?). I would love to have changed some of my denim shirts to regular ones, as they had disney characters. I still wear one of them, but have to agree, it is extremely long in the front, which gives it aaway as a maternity top. I only wear it around the house. Good luck and let us know how you do with this. I know many will find your trial & error useful. Peggy
