Gone are the days of women wearing housedresses and aprons. I am curious, how many of us have jobs outside of the home?

Hi, I work part time as an ER nurse. I stayed home about a year with our little one and returned last Spring. I am very very blessed to have a supervisor who understands family needs and I have a really good schedule. My husband left the decision up to me and I really did not want to come back full time.

I love retirement.. I can read, sew, volunteer and travel.. Don't get to travel as much as I like, but that is OK also..I'm Happy... :bg: :bg: :bg:

My dh and I had opposite 12-hour shifts so while one worked the other watch our dd until she was 11 months old. Then he took on extra work and I had to get a 9-5 to accomodate daycare. I am a Healthcare Consultant/RN for Quality Assurance in the NJ Medicaid/State offices. Since I'm not running up and down the hospital floors anymore I've gained weight sitting at a desk (secretarial spread). It's great not being on my feet anymore but my butt is getting big!! :bang:

I have been teaching for 30 years  , mostly by my own choice. I have taught every grade 1-8, most recently moving to 7th grade geography. It's been a great run - I loved having the kind of job that I was able to have the same hours and time off with my kids when they were growing up. It's certainly not for everyone, but it works for me.

I am retired or semi retired, can't decided which is the best description.
I have had various jobs outside the home over the years along with raising 6 kids and being a farm wife. The outside jobs are over and the kids are raised but one never retires from being a farm wife. I still do all the bookkeeping and bill paying for the farms and that means I am on the computer everyday. It also means that I can check into SWN often during the day and can also chat with friends from time to time. Nice not having a boss around to peek over my shoulder! LOLOL Even though Mr Green Jeans is also SUPPOSED to be retired he just can't stay out of the fields.

I was mainly a stay at home mom as that's what we both agreed on. I did work at times when DH was home to care for the kids. He worked days & I was on evenings until midnight. When the kids were small I baby sat in our home with ages same as mine. So it was sort of off & on working during those years. After that I worked full time as I love working out. Finally had to quit as was drs orders. I still miss working out even though I sure have plenty to do here at home. I don't have time to sew anytime I want to & that bothers me. Sewing to me is like a kid wanting to play. So neither one of us are retired. In fact I'm not looking forward to that even. But then, do women really ever get to retire like a man does ? My oldest brother retired from different jobs, Another brother never retired, my dad retired but worked 2 more jobs after that even though the government got most of his money. One of my bosses had retired 3 times. He said the same thing my Dad did " you can only fish, travel & play golf just so much ".I have to pace myself so when I need a break that's when I get on the computer. If I start to sew, I don't get back to what I needed to be doing.

After being laid off from the technology sector a few times, I have a variety of part-time jobs. Some paid, some unpaid (volunteer). My home daycare consists of 3 kindergartners who come to my house after school everyday until their parents get off of work. Then I work weekends at our neighborhood clubhouse; teach a religion class on Tuesday evenings (volunteeer) and used to sell Partylite candles. I also was a seller on Ebay until late last year. My DS starts part-time kindergarten in the Fall, so I am trying to figure out what to do to bring in income. All the other kids will either have moved away, or be in school fulltime.

However, after almost 5 years at home, finding & working a full-time job is daunting. I do need an income to supplement DH's, so I am trying to figure out what to do.

I'm looking forward to retirment, when $$ isn't a problem and I can sew to my heart's content. oh well, that's a long way off yet......

Sorry to ramble.....

I have worn many dresses and uniforms over the years, and some covered with aprons in the workplace. I have been retired for 3 years. I graduated with a baccalaureate in nursing in 1964 and aside from a few years when I was having babies (14 months apart and 3 moves) I have always worked full time with a few times of part time and contracts thrown in. I worked for most of my career as a nursing educator, all types of nursing. Most of my employers were educational institutions and as a nurse I kept up my clinical skills in clinical settings whenever I could. Clinically and theoretically my areas of practice were family nursing (both Mat and Peds and laterly family nursing) and surgical nursing.
Whenever there is a cut back in any govt funding, education and health care are the first to be cut. Over they years there were many lean times. Lean in money but not in work to be done! I never lost a job d/t cutbacks as I always seemed to be senior where ever I was. But I was glad to retire as I was tired. I thought I would miss it - patients and students, but I am very surprised to find I don't. I keep abreast with areas that interest me and know how to find info on the rest and try to organize myself to sew and quilt. I have sewn consistently since a child.

I'm a free lance writer contributing to a couple area newspapers. I work from home although I have to go places and meet people too.
This week I have more work than usual and I'm trying to get out of town. I'll have to bust my butt for a couple days now making phone calls then I can probably write some while I'm on vacation. Hows that for someone that doesn't have a job and is on vacation?

Hey Maureen, I can relate! After 2+ years as a Utililzation Review RN for an insurance company, my backside is much bigger than it ever used to be!!! Sometimes I think about going back to the floor just to lose some of this butt! LOL

Me, I've worked full time ever since I was old enough to work, even when I lived at home w/my folks and went to school. In fact, at one point I was working full time, going to school full time and working a part time job!

I've been a SAHM, homeschooling, for 15 years. I NEED to go out and get a job, but gads after this long it's impossible, lol! I'm also somewhat disabled [can't sit, stand, or walk from arthritis and pinched nerves]. Sure wish I could get paid to quilt.

I've spent the last 31 years in the legal field and am now 17 months away from full retirement. However, my immediate supervisor in the Oklahoma Attorney General's Office just looks at me and says "I don't think so" when I mention that I will be retiring in a year and half. Instead of slowing down as I near retirement, I'm getting busier and find that people are planning more things for me to do when I am finally retired from the 9 to 5 rat race.

I am a lab tech in a hospital, that was working part time and now am going full time but not by choice - that's for sure. My Dr said no more nights, no more evenings, which was fine by me, but she did say I could work full time days - and so, thats what the union is having me do. Darn it anyhow, I was really enjoying my 3/4 time position too. So in April I am back to full time. And I will be posting on all 1/2 time positions on day shift that I can!!! Or taking lots of LOA's!! I have worked pretty well continuously since high school, except for taking time off to have babies. If I could do it again, I would have stayed home with them longer than the year I did. This job I am just leaving was the first part time job I have ever had and I really liked being part time ( I know I said that - but I really mean it!)

I was a cake decorator for 30 yrs..I loved it...(as long as I didn't have to deal with people too much. Being a waitress at 18-19 cured me of that). I'd still do it now (and I still have all my stuff, untouched since 99 when I had to quit). Due to arthritis...then I tried selling shoes at our local BX...now THAT was a job that nearly killed me....it wasn't the physical part, it was the people, their screamming because they didn't get what they wanted, especially the officers, being hit and shoved around. I cried every night. So after 6 mnths my Dr said quit or die...
My hands still itch to decorate though...thats why all the sewing/embroidery machines...substitutes. (more expensive than smoking and a lot less dangerous :bluewink: ) Although I could be squashed one day by a pile of fabric....ya never know when a machine will jump you and needle you to death...thats why they're confined to cabinets...

Lyn, I bet you got the best grades when you were the busiest.
I had an 18 credit semester and made Dean's List in nursing school. But when I had a 9 credit semester I just got by with the skin of my teeth. I guess when you eat, sleep, study, (have nightmares) about nursing some of the infomation eventually seeps into your brain.

I work full-time at an auto parts store and very part-time at a group home for adult mentally handicapped, married but with DH gone on the road for 12 days in a row it's just like being a single mom to our 16 year old DD who is home-schooled.
Twice I attempted to start a home sewing business but fears of not doing something right legally and I so missed talking to people everyday that I decided to get a job outside the home again. My DH used to tease me that I could make a go of the sewing business if I set my machines up in the middle of a mall somewhere where I could talk to people all day. ( I had to explain that wouldn't work either... I would spend every $$$$ I made in the mall!)
Needless to say my sewing machines are very lonely right now but hopefully someday soon I will be able to cut back on my full time work and the machines and I will get re-aquainted.

Worked out side the home for many years, started when our youngest daughter was 3, she's now 37. Finally we got our own business going and now work from the home. Seems like I got alot more done when the kids were all at home and I worked full time than I do now. Most of the jobs I liked, but some were the real pits. Of couse I only stayed at them long enough(approx 8-9 months) to find another job some where else that I did like. The longest I ever stayed in one place was 17 years and then only left that job because it was an american company and they closed down the canadian one and went home or I would still be there likley. I really, really like that job and totally miss it and the people.

I started out as a Police Dispatcher for two different departments, had to leave that field as it was becoming very depressing dealing with the bad side of life all the time. I worked part time jobs when the kids where little, and finally settled into Industrial Sewing for 15 years. I was on Medical Leave 3 years ago and my former boss sold the company (to settle his divorce ) to a out of state group, leaving me no job to come back to!!! The products that I made are now being sent to Mexico to be made.
Now my days are spent taking care of the house, cats & DH, helping the kids do things that they can't get done because of their work schedules/ class schedules.
I have been rearranging my sewing room and try to get something done in there everyday and go work out at the local rec center.
I do get bored not having a job some days, but then other days I am running so much for this one or that one who needs one!!!!!!!
In this part of the State and Country if you have a job you are one of the lucky ones. We are losing jobs weekly here. Ford, GM, Timken, NCR, and even some Hospitals have been hit very hard with job losses.

You're right Maureen, seemed the busier I was, the better I did! I was Dean's list most of the time but it seemed easier if I was busier-I guess you just don't have time to goof around when you are taking a full load and raising a family! Funny how that works, huh?

Trying to catch up on posts since I have been gone for almost 3 weeks...lots happening and don't think I will ever see them all.

I worked for almost 30 years in banking and finance, raised 3 children, did the usual house things, followed one daughter through 3 years of band. In 2002, my husband (now my ex) and I sold the house and moved into our RV to live and travel full time. That is a wonderful life and am getting ready to do it again. I just turned 60 and my husband will be 65 in March 07. As of March 1, he will retire. We move into our new RV by the 15th of April, the house has been sold along with almost all of the furniture. The only thing we have to get rid of is the doubles of things we have in the house and RV, and my son has said he can always use "stuff", so a lot will go there. The two daughters are well set with "stuff" I am now going through the house sorting things...go to RV, go to storage or go to Goodwill or trash. Some of the stuff Goodwill won't want!!

We have both been thinking about this day since we got married. It is not the life for everyone, but if you aren't "stuck" with your things and your house, it is great. My children are scattered from Colorado, to Nebraska to Florida. Nice places to visit at different times of the year too!

Beachgirl--I always thought my mother was THE stupidest person on the face of this earth now I just hope I'm as smart as her one day!
I always giggle though b/c my 15 yr old often tells me "you are just like BeBe!" BeBe is what she calls my mom --I take it as a compliment as well.
I have had friends come and go and people in and out of my life but one things always constant and that is the friendship I have with my mom.

I remember my mom telling my older brother (after he probably said something stupid - he was 16 at the time), "I'm the best friend you'll ever have". And she was right.
Even though my mom is here "physically" I miss the mom she used to be (my eyes are welling up and it's almost 2 years since she's been in the rehab/long term care facility - Dad spends every night there from 5-8p and brings her home once or twice a week - he misses her too). She was the only one who really understood me (Dad never understood women) and the way we used to talk about so many things. She helped me understand my new baby at the time and was so thrilled when she heard that her little girl was going to have a little girl.
I'm glad that we'll be moving soon and then we'll only be 3 hours away. At least I can see her (and my dad) at least once every two weeks instead of once every ten months.

Oh Mozey--you made me teary reading your latest post..I am happy that you'll be closer to your parents as well! The furtherest I've been from mine has been 1 hr and I still miss them tremendously being just an hour away! I was always a "daddy's girl" and could talk to my dad easier when I was younger however as I have been grown and especially the past few years, I talk to my mother about almost everything. She's a very smart lady and has learned alot over the years that she is not hesitant to share. You know moms though--she doesn't wait to give advice until she's asked..she tells you what she thinks regardless...
My mother in law on the other hand will wait until I ask her advice and then she tells all. She told me once that she wouldn't hesitate to tell her sons what they think whether they ask or not but with her daughters in law she'll wait until asked.
I stayed with my parents last fall alot after my hysterectomy b/c I couldn't lift the baby, drive, etc and Al had to work..a girlfriend of mine from home was often at the house visiting. Several evenings, my mom and I had patterns all over the kitchen table and were sewing and chatting and my friend said that seeing us like that made her miss her mom so much and reminded me that life is so short and we should always take advantage of time to spend with our family and friends. She's right...

During the day I'm a career Civil Servant and have been for 19 years, for most of which I was a tax inspector until I moved to government policy 5 years ago. Jolly exciting stuff.......... :throw:

The "other" jobs make up for it though - today I've been a music teacher, a French teacher, a domestic goddess, a "helper" for next door as they had a flood, an animal psychologist, gardener, cook and hairdresser. Later on I'll be a wife for a little while

I've been a writer for more than 20 years. That includes stints as a journalist, newsletter writer, magazine editor, marketing/PR writer and freelancer. Heck, I even wrote for Sew Whats New a time or two. Now I work for a bank (snooze) in the marketing department as a writer (what else). But they also let me do some public education seminars, which I am enjoying. (new skills, hooray!)

I've never written a bumper sticker, a greeting card, a tombstone or a television commercial, so I guess I've still got a ways to go LOL.

I'm also 1/3 of the way through a master's degree in women's ministry. Guess what? Seminary students do a lot of WRITING! Just proof that God has a sense of humor and his call sometimes lands on the most cracked pots in the cupboard. I Have no idea where this will take me, but I hope it doesn't involve writing. I'm pretty sick of it!

I've done lots of the things over the last 25 years. Part-time, Full-time and Overtime! :dave: Right now I am a business owner who works mostly part-time except for the holidays- every holiday!

We own a premium pie shop and it seems that everyone around here wants PIE for their holidays- Valentine's- Strawberry Cheesecake Amore', St. Patrick's- Irish Cream Pie, Easter- All kinds but mostly Strawberry & Lemon Meringue. Mother's Day- Mostly meringues. Father's day- mostly fruit pies. July 4th- All kinds. August is our slowest month- wish I could come up with a holiday in there somewhere! But of course, our busiest season is November and December. On the day before Thanksgiving we sell around 2500 pies with about 800 of those being pumpkin. Guess who DOESN'T eat pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. I also don't get to enjoy the holiday season because I'm either working or sleeping. I almost always lose 10-15 lbs during that time.

It's the job I have enjoyed the most. I love to bake- always have. And yes, I still bake at home. That's a question I get a lot!

But it's the Overtime that has MADE me go to part time only. I think I abused my body for too long getting the business up and running, but it was worth it! I'm know as the Pie lady in these parts and of course, hubby is the Pie King. :re:

Let them eat PIE! :bg: Ronda

Ronda,
How about "picnic pies" for August. Little personal pies (like a pot pie) to take to the pool, for picnics, or anywhere else that you want to take something sweet but don't want the hassle of wrapping up a single slice of pie? Thinking about Labor Day and the fact that you don't have to have one large pie of a single flavor - a couple small ones to have a choice of flavors. Just an idea.........
I love to bake but hate to cook. My dh is the opposite - works out pretty good.

Well, my "forte" (is that the right word?) is secretarial work, did that for 20 plus years, I've worked at four different offices, three were government and one was a lawyer's office, but I've done alot of other things over the years....in between jobs....cleaned cabins in the summer at local resorts, waitressed, bartended, cooked, baked and decorated cakes, and more recently am selling a few of my quilty items I've made.

I gave up an awesome job when I got married and started a family but I consider myself lucky to have been able to be a SAHM until my kids turned the age where they could be at home alone for a few hours during the day and up until a couple yars ago worked somewhere or another since...but now I've been out of work for awhile and even tho I am enjoying it immensely I do need extra $$$ so wish I could find something soon....I would love to just sit here in my home at the computer and earn money but most of those jobs are scams and I can't seem to peg down one that will work for me....anybody got a good connection????

I have been diagnosed with osteo-arthritis and most days I'm good and could work but there are alot of days especially in the winter where I have alot of pain and certainly can't bartend or waitress anymore! LOL AHH to be young and healthy again!!

I guess I am the odd ball.

My husband did NOT want to to work out of the home when we got married, in 1986 he made 5.00 an hour, we had one truck, and making end meet, we could not do it. Then in 1987 we moved up to OKC for an 7.00 an hour job, his best friend from K-12 school moved with us and they both went to work at the same shop (and half the apt. rent) a year later for 10.oo we moved to Dallas, TX ( friend came with) WE moved back up here because of cost,

Money has always been tight for us, but with 2 children and with DH not wanting me to work, I would have it no other way.. I have been with them since birth Now they are 19 & 14.

some days I wish I could work, other days I am glad I don't

As for money, Yes the extra money would have been nice, and so much worry would have been out of the way..

Even now, there are times I wished I was working. we sure could use the money. but he is making pretty good money 19.00 an hour.
Just enough so our Daughter cannot get aid for collage & and too little to do any good. HA!
