Help please, what is the proper way to lengthen sleeves on a jacket?
Thanks.

Is this an alteration on an existing jacket or is this a pattern?

It is an existing jacket with lining in 78 acetate, 18 polymida and 4% lycra.

How much fabric do you have on the inside of the sleeve (hem)? And what is it (wool?)

There is an inch of fabric turned under. The fabric and the lining have the same content, the fabric is a heavier weight.

That's not much..can you feel if you have more under the lining? Usually the lining drops over about 2 inches of fabric.

How much do you need to add to the jacket?

Don't faint if I ask but is there a possiblity that you could add a wide braid trim of some sort to the jacket near the bottom of the sleeve or at the edge of the sleeve? If there isn't much space, it is possible that you could add fabric to the garment and trim over it. Some things will lend themselves to that, others won't.

There is only 1/4" of lining folded over 1/4" of fabric. I wish I could just add an embellishment but it is patterned in dark red with black animal spots. Long arms are such a pain!!

You say the fabric is dark red with black spots? What about some kind of plain black fabric to edge the other fabric? Lining fabric can always be added to the lining to make it long enough. Or maybe some kind of wide black braid set in on the sleeve about 1-1/4" above the lower edge of the sleeve? Then a piece of lining fabric similar to what is already there added to the lining. It would not need to be set it, just added on. By set it, I mean you would cut a strip off the the sleeve about 1-1/2" wide, attach the braid to the upper sleeve, then attach the lower edge of the braid to the cut off fabric with a very narrow seam allowance and then lengthen the lining with fabric similar to what is there already. I did custom sewing for years and you would be surprised at all the things I have done to jackets with too-short or too-long or too tight sleeves! MariLynntex

How much do you need to lengthen the sleeve. Can you sew a facing to the bottom of the sleeve with a 1/4 inch seam. Then at least you would get that inch that is turned under now. Maybe, if you put some piping -- you can make it flat, without any cord in it-- in the facing seam you might be able to get up to 1/2 inch there.

You can also cut the lining so that your pieced portion is further up the forearm. Most people don't see in your sleeve and that prevents having a seam close to the opening.

Thanks for the suggestions. I could get away with an inch more in length. Its an evening jacket and the fabric is lightweight.

Just a thought... I had a nice show jacket (horses) that was a light weight but the sleeves where way to short for me to ride in(you hold your arms in an L shape and that takes alot up on a sleeve) But I was able to go up at the shoulder/armpit area and get another 1/2" (almost) then I let out the wrist and got another 1/2" Just a thought. it is a nice nice nice dress type jacket and wouldnt be regulation with any ribbon or "additions" I have also done a tiny hem at the wrist with interfacing like 1/8" then you get a bit more.
